Area resident Carol Knarr leads storytelling experience at Silver Lake restaurant

Homestead’s Backyard Grille in nearby Silver Lake has hired local professional storyteller Carol Knarr to serve-up love stories just in time for Valentine’s Day. Owners Mike and Renita Weaver were looking for a new way to utilize the banquet room and Knarr’s offer to tell stores was a natural partnership.

“Storytelling is a good match for Homestead’s. We provide an atmosphere that like storytelling is a connection to heritage,” the couple said.

Knarr’s family-friendly stories are good entertainment for the entire family.

Knarr moved to Arizona 11 years ago to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Children’s Theatre.  Teaching storytelling for South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute was a highlight of her teaching experience while in Phoenix.

“I moved back to Indiana in October to be near my parents,” Knarr said of her recent return to the community.

“While eating a piece of pie at Homestead’s, I began to think what a pleasant atmosphere the restaurant had and how great it would be to have a ‘home’ where I could tell stories regularly,” Knarr said. She shared the idea with the restaurant’s owners adding, “Mike loved the idea.”

Knarr is optimistic she may eventually begin offering storytelling and improvisation classes locally as well.

Knarr will present stories from around the world and a personal story titled “My Love/hate Relationship with Valentine’s Day.”  The concert will start promptly at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, February 12 and 1:30 p.m. Sunday, February 15.  Attendees are asked to arrive about 30 minutes earlier to order dinner -- or come for pie and coffee. The concert will consist of two 30-minute sets of stories with a brief intermission allowing families with young children the flexibility to leave early, if necessary.

The Weavers are the former owners of the well-known Maplelane Bakery, from 2000 until 2008.  They named their newest venture Homestead’s Backyard Grille as a throwback to days gone by creating an atmosphere that honors their values of God, faith, family and country. Homestead’s Backyard Grille is located at 9665 South SR 15 N. in Silver Lake (Kosciusko County).

Knarr is planning several different storytelling programs in the coming months, including:

March 19 & 22 Irish Stories

April 16 & 19 Stories of Kosciusko County

May 14 & 17 Emma Edmonds, a Civil War Spy.

Thursday performances begin at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday performances begin at 1:30 p.m.
