Elbow to elbow, a group of devoted local women have been gathering for the past several months to organize the inaugural Power of the Purse event in Whitley County, a fun evening for women with a great cause -- ensuring that Whitley County children have the best possible start to school with the Kindergarten Countdown Program.
Cindy Baker, executive director of the United Way of Whitley County, is pleased to announce the committee selected to plan this year's inaugural event includes Donna Packnett, Laura Lefever, Leslie von Seggern, Lori Shipman, Ashley Casey, Katie Dewitt, Debra Lee, Jody Baber and Jennifer Zartman Romano.
The United Way of Whitley County's Power of the Purse is slated for Thursday, May 18, 2017, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Eagle Glen Event Center in Columbia City.
"Through Power of the Purse, we are bringing together a group of women who are passionate about their community to plan an event that celebrates the giving spirit possessed by women in our community," Baker said. "As women, we understand how truly powerful philanthropy is and we want to celebrate the women in our community who want to give to make a real difference in Whitley County."
According to the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, women give more than their male peers at virtually all income levels -- even though women typically earn less, have less retirement funding and a greater life expectancy.
"Despite our busy schedules and our responsibilities, women in our community have an extraordinary opportunity to act as agents of change when they act upon causes that truly matter to them," Baker said. "In this case, many women can identify with the importance of early childhood education and want every child to have a good start."
The Power of the Purse is sponsored by Parkview Whitley Hospital and Scientific and Regulatory Consultants (SRC). The event is also made possible with contributions from Professional Federal Credit Union, Edward Jones Investments - Melinda Woll, Daniel Menu and Party Consulting,  Brook & Co. Salon, Downtown Business Alliance, Dewitt Marketing, Tiffany Jones - Stylist at House of Style, Opal & Ruby Emporium, Star Financial Bank, The von Seggern Family, Snippers and Jennifer Zartman Romano - Whitley County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center.
Tickets are $35 each and raffle tickets are $5 per ticket. To purchase tickets for the event, contact the United Way of Whitley County at (260) 244-6454 or via email at  unitedwayofwhitleycounty@gmail.com
