Veg'n Brew Fest planned for October in Fort Wayne

Article provided

Many people are aware of the health benefits that can result from eating a plant-based diet including the reduction of numerous health conditions including diabetes, obesity, cancer, Alzheimer's, and heart disease. It also eliminates the suffering of animals in our food system and creates a healthier environment. And, across the globe, everyone from celebrities to health professionals, and chefs are adopting a plant-based lifestyle to take advantage of these benefits.
Here in Fort Wayne we've seen an explosion in the vegan movement as well with a number of grocery stores and restaurants now offering plant-based options including Loving Cafe, 800 Degrees Three Fires, D-lightfuls, Mitchell's Sports Bar, Young Urban Homesteaders, Pembroke Bakery & Cafe, West Central Microcreamery, Hop River Brewing Company, and many more including two new restaurants opening soon - Bird & Clever and Taste of Lakeside.
Now, a new festival, the Fort Wayne Veg'n Brew Fest, will give attendees the opportunity to explore a plant-based lifestyle and its many benefits. The Fort Wayne Veg'n Brew Fest is a free festival open to all ages and will be held October 6, 2018 at Headwaters Park from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. with a special VIP hour from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. This one-day event will feature local and regional restaurants offering vegan fares, vendors, rescue groups, a plant-based cooking demonstration, and speakers on zero-waste living. Mitchell's Sports Bar will also be on hand serving alcohol and local breweries will be serving up their suds to the beat of some of Fort Wayne's finest musicians. Kids are also welcome, as we'll have fun activities for them as well, even yoga classes for fitness-minded friends.
"We're very excited to bring the Fort Wayne Veg'n Brew Fest to our community and there's no better time than right now," says Heather Dahman, chairman of Fort Wayne's newest festival and founder of the Fort Wayne Vegans & Vegetarians Group. In recent years, Fort Wayne has experienced a rise in interest in health, animal welfare, and the environment. We've also seen a growing movement both locally and nationwide to reduce the use of plastic straws. While ditching plastic straws helps our planet, adopting a plant-based diet is one of the most powerful choices we can make to aid the Earth as animal agriculture is the single largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. We are excited to invite the public to learn how a plant-based lifestyle can reduce their impact on the environment as well as improve their health and reduce animal suffering."
Festival-goers will have the opportunity to:
- Sample plant-based (including gluten-free) foods including pizza, burgers, noodle bowls, chili cheese fries, pastries, cookies, ice cream shakes, and more!
- Visit vegan, fair trade, and Eco-friendly vendors
- Meet adoptable dogs available at the Allen County SPCA
- Listen to speakers discuss how to help the environment with a zero-waste lifestyle
- Enjoy live music from Alyssa Enright, Kelsie Cotie, Be Colony, and Belle & the Strange
- Participate in kids activities - yoga, trivia, vegetable gardening, and more
- Listen to children's book readings from local author Heather Leughmyer
- Learn how to cook plant-based foods through a cooking demonstration

- Have a drink - this is where the "brew" part of our name comes in, and we don't just mean coffee and kombucha but alcohol and beer, too.
The Fort Wayne Veg'n Brew Fest is free to the public from noon to 6 p.m., however tickets are available for $15 for a special VIP hour from 11 a.m. to noon. Only 100 tickets are available and will allow VIPers early access to all of the food and vendors for one hour without the lines.
The Fort Wayne Veg'n Brew Fest is made possible by our sponsors which include Mitchell's Sports Bar, Young Urban Homesteaders, Kaya Organics, and the Health Food Shoppe.
