Arthur Edward Bates, 67, formerly of Columbia City, died of cancer on November 14, 2006,in Mexico. 

Born in Columbia City on August 14, 1939, he was the son of Kenneth and Edna E. (Sievers) Bates.  

Survivors include sons, Jay Wayne Rubrake of Columbia City and Arthur Bates, Jr. of Maryland; daughter, Paula Mitchell of Sylvania, Ohio, his mother, Edna E. Bates of Columbia City; 4 grandchildren; brothers, Charles Bates of Oxnard, California, Thomas Bates of Fort Wayne and William Bates of New Ulm, Minnesota, sisters, Barbara Thomas of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Dorothy Pressler of Churubusco. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

His father, Kenneth Bates, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Chaplain Richard Sievers of Fort Wayne will be officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service in the community room of DeMoney-Grimes. Burial will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery , rural Columbia City.
