William G. Thomas, 83

William G. Thomas Sr., 83, of Kimmell, died Thursday May 29, 2008 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
Born Oct. 7, 1924 in Fort Wayne he was a WW II Army veteran. He was a retired home builder and member of Sugar Grove Church of God where he served as an elder, trustee, superintendent and enjoyed men’s brotherhood group and ice cream socials. He also attended Ormas Baptist Church. He
 had a passion for woodworking, playing the harmonica and helping others.
He married Pearl Mae Grabach on Oct 7, 1944, and she preceded him in death in 1993. He is survived by his second wife, Peg (Berkes) Earnhart whom he married on Jan. 6, 1996; sons, Bill (Roxanne) Thomas and Dave (Renee) Thomas both of Columbia City; daughters, Linda (Jim) Heath of Columbia City, Lynn (Kevin) Bricker of Athens, Wisconsin, and Audrey (Dan) Barton of Vevay, Indiana; stepchildren, Randy (Cathy) Earnhart of Fort Wayne and Cindy (Roger) Niles of Syracuse; 14 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters.
Funeral service 1p.m. Sunday with calling one hour prior at Covington Memorial Funeral Home 8408 Covington Rd. Calling Saturday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at Sugar Grove Church of God 5019 E. 500S Churubusco. Burial in Covington Memorial Gardens.

Danny L. Hoskins, 50

Danny L. Hoskins, 50, of Fort Wayne, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at home surrounded by his family.
The son of the late Rita and Millard Hoskins, he was born July 31, 1957, in Fort Wayne. A proud 30-year member, he was actively involved with the Union Iron Workers Local 147 in Fort Wayne.
Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Eileen; children, Joshua Strack of Hoagland; Rita, Jacob and Rose Hoskins, all at home; grandchildren, Alyssa, Nolan and Daniel; brothers, Michael (Karen) Hoskins of Columbia City and Mark Hoskins of Hoagland; and sisters, Robin (Robin) West of Fort Wayne and Tanya (John) Jones of Leo.

A service is planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home, Winchester Road Chapel, 6424 Winchester Road, with calling one hour prior. Rev. E. Vaughn Powell, 85

Rev. E. Vaughn Powell, 85, widely acquainted resident of Churubusco and pastor emeritus of Churubusco United Methodist Church, died at 2:15 a. m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He had been in declining health for the past several months.
Rev. Powell was born on September 12, 1922, in Linneus, Missouri, a son of Alonzo Everett and Marian Rebecca (Stone) Powell. He spent his formative years in Linn County, Missouri, and graduated from Linneus High School in 1940.
As a young man he served with the U. S. Army during World War II, and was married in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on November 5, 1944, to Marie W. Sperry. Following his military discharge in 1945, the couple moved to Indianapolis and lived there for ten years. He attended the Jordan School of Music at Butler University, and was called into public ministry at Whitestown in 1958.
Rev. Powell attended Garrett Biblical Institute in Evanston, Illinois, and was a pastor in the North Indiana Conference of The United Methodist Church for 32 years. The couple moved to Churubusco in 1990 following his retirement. Pastorates included Kirklin-Lanes Chapel, Mulberry, Otterbein, Churubusco and LaGrange.
In addition to his ministerial career, his life was marked by affiliations and memberships in several organizations. He was a member and past secretary of Churubusco Lodge 515 F&AM, and was a past master. A member of the Churubusco Lions Club, he had held various Lions Club local and district offices, and was a member of the Gilbert Davis American Legion Post 157 in Churubusco.
An amateur magician, he was a member of the Order of Merlin–International Brotherhood of Magicians for 35 years. He served as a chaplain for the Indiana State Police for many years, and for 24 years served on the board of directors for the Indiana United Methodist Federal Credit Union, serving as its president for ten years. He always volunteered for various community and civic activities, enjoyed traveling, and had a heart for missions and the underprivileged.
The surviving relatives include his wife Marie, to whom he was married for over 63 years; five daughters Linda (Gene) Marshall of Mulberry; Jean (Steve) Wiyatt of Effingham, Illinois; Stephanie (Robert) Drake of Champions Gate, Florida; Kimberly Powell of Leo; and Kris (Jim) Fry of Churubusco; a sister Nina Birney of Sublette, Kansas; ten grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters Vera Rinehart, Leona Reid, and Mariam Stillwell; and four brothers William Bradley Powell, Francis Stone Powell, Raymond Alonzo Powell and Gerald Powell.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p. m. on Saturday, May 31, at the Churubusco United Methodist Church with the Revs. Christine Newman-Jacobs, James Copeland, and David Michel, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Friday from 2-4 and from 6-8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery, south of Churubusco, with military graveside rites by the U. S. Army.

Benny E. "Ben" Bradley, 76

Benny E." Ben" Bradley, 76, died Monday, May 26, 2008 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in Norton, Virginia, he was a 1949 graduate of Poling High School in Jay County, Indiana, and received an Associate Degree from International Business College. He was a Purchasing Agent with Midwestern United Life Insurance Company, retiring after 28 years of service in 1988.
In 1995, he retired as an auctioneer at AAA Auction with 15 years of service. He also preformed small engine repair.
Ben was a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a 40-year member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where he sat on several committees and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Indiana Auctioneer Association.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Leta "Lee" Bradley of Fort Wayne; sons, Chad L. (Garna) Bradley of Columbia City, Scott L. Bradley of Sebring, Florida; grandchildren, Gretchen (Troy) Moon of Fort Wayne, Justyn (Beth) Bradley of Jupiter, Florida; great-grandchildren, Teagen & Vaughn; sisters, Louise Call of Anderson, Indiana, Jeanette Shauver of Portland, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews.
The service is 10 a.m. Friday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2417 Getz Roadwith calling 1 hour prior. Rev. Weber officiating. Calling also 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at D.O. Karen D. Brinkley, 45

Karen D. Brinkley, 45, a resident of Noblesville and formerly of Churubusco and Fort Wayne, died at 6:45 p. m. on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at St. Vincent’s Hospice Home in Indianapolis. She had been in declining health for the past two years.
Ms. Brinkley was born on April 5, 1963 in St. Louis, Missouri, a daughter of Thomas and Betty (Vancil) Brinkley, and spent her formative years in Kirkwood, Missouri. She moved to Fort Wayne in 1987, and later lived in Churubusco for a period before moving to her present home in Noblesville in 2001.
She was employed as a home health aid for Rescare in Noblesville.
The surviving relatives include her two daughters Tiffany (Jason) Trostel of Churubusco and Melissa Cornish of Albion; her companion John Abrams of Noblesville; two brothers Michael Brinkley of Peadmont, Missouri., and Jimmy Brinkley of St. Claire, Missouri; two sisters Brenda (Joe) Servillo of Sunset Hills, Missouri., and Theresa (Dale) Ware of St. Louis, Missouri; and her two grandsons Blake Trostel and Wesley Trostel.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother William Brinkley.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Friday, May 30, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with the Rev. Lane Burgland, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Thursday from 4 to 8 p. m.
Interment will be in the South Park Cemetery Annex, Columbia City.

William D. Jagger, 86

William D. Jagger, 86, Silver Lake, went to be with his Lord at 4:05 a.m. Sunday, May 25, 2008 at his residence.
He was born October 15, 1921, in Columbia City to Fred E. and Ethel M. (Gipe) Jagger. On August 15, 1942, he married Evelyn L. Kline. She survives.
He farmed with his father for a short while, was a house-painter and U.S. Postal clerk. In 1966 he and Evelyn purchased the Summe Hardware in Silver Lake and operated it with their son, Larry, until 1994.
He was a 1939 graduate of Silver Lake High School, a member of the American Legion, Silver Lake and a life member of Disabled American Veterans, Warsaw.
During the years Bill was raising his children, he was a Boy Scout leader for more than 10 years. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and "tinkering" in his workshop. Bill loved his Lord, adored his “Ëvey" and treasured his children and grandchildren. He was a U.S. Marine veteran serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II, suffering severe injury during the battle of Saipan. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member and deacon of West Eel River Church of the Brethren, Silver Lake.
Survivors include two sons, Larry W. (Faye) Jagger, Winona Lake,  and Dr. Michael J. Jagger, Mishawaka; one daughter, Gaylo (Mrs. David) Goss, Rochester. He is also survived by one sister, Thelma (Mrs. Jack) Butler, Laketon, 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Phillip E. Jagger in 1970, a daughter-in-law, Ramona Jagger and two sisters.
Services will be held Thursday, May 29, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. in West Eel River Church of the Brethren in Silver Lake. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at DeLaughter-McKee Mortuary in North Manchester and also one our prior to the service at the church.
Pastor Paul Tinkel will officiate and burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Silver Lake.

Harvey J. Hile, 93

Harvey J. Hile, age 93, passed away at 9:12 a.m. on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in Goshen, IN on June 30, 1914, he was the son of Barney C. and Verda M. (Winebrenner) Hile.
As a child, he was raised in Noble County until 1927 when he and his family moved to Whitley County where he graduated with the Class of 1932 from Columbia City High School. In 1935, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he resided for ten years working at Midland Steel during World War II. He later returned to his small farm in Noble County. In 1979, he made Columbia City his permanent home.
For eight years, he worked at Essex Wire Company in Fort Wayne. He then entered the construction business with Hobbs Construction Company of Albion. He also worked for Russell Carson in his bottle gas business at Wolf Lake. In 1979, he retired from Lyall Electric Company in Albion after 15 years of service.
In 1935, he married Florence “Luella” Smith who preceded him in death in 1977. On January 1, 1979, he married Elma May Boggs-Keiser. She preceded him in death on September 18, 2002.
He was a former member of the Big Lake Church of God and for many years taught in the Sunday School Program. Most recently he was a member of the South Whitley Church of God.
He also served as a proud member of the Civil Defense in Detroit during World War II.
Survivors include his daughter, Muriel (Ron) McNeal of Churubusco; son, Paul H. (Bonnie) Hile of Columbia City; 5 grandchildren, Craig (Laura) McNeal and Rhonda McNeal of Fort Wayne, Paul W. Hile and Mark M. (Diane) Hile both of Columbia City and Jennifer M. (Kenneth) Button of Columbia City; 7 great-grandchildren, Nathanial and Mariah McNeal of Fort Wayne, Chasity, Avery and Courtney Hile of Columbia City, Emilee and Bryana Button of Columbia City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Florence “Luella” Hile and his second wife, Elma M. Hile, and sister Evelyn M. Carson.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City. Funeral service is at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at the funeral home with Pastor Phil Blake officiating. Burial will follow at Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam.

Willis J. “Bill” Sims, Jr., 60, of South Whitley, received his wings and flew away to heaven to be with his parents at 7:25 a.m. Friday, May 23, 2008 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
He was born April 29, 1948 in Huntington, Indiana a son of Willis J. and Geraldine F. (Cunningham) Sims. His formative years were spent in South Whitley where he completed his education.
On September 11, 1965 he was united in marriage to Roberta J. Fisher. They have always made their home in the South Whitley area, moving to their present home 15 years ago.
For the past 12 years, he has owned and operated Bill Sims Machine Shop.
Those waiting to join him are his wife of 42 years, Roberta; five children, James Edward (Connie) Sims of South Whitley, Angela Joy (John Neadstine) Williams of Monroeville, Tammy Jean (Herb Shepherd) Sims of South Whitley, Mark Robert Sims of South Whitley and Jenny Jenel (Darrell Guerin) Johnson; 10 grandchildren; four sisters, Phyllis (Gerald) Stayer of North Manchester, Fran (Dick) Adams of Comfort, Texas, Judy (John) Wilmont of Columbia City and Rita Shelton of Columbia City; four brothers, Chester (Liz) Sims of Churubusco, Charles David (Glenda) Sims of South Whitley, Larry (Judy) Sims of Columbia City and Tim (Beth) Sims of Michigan; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends and customers of his business.

Iva M. Gorsuch, 92

Iva M. Gorsuch, 92, a resident of Churubusco and widow of Dean W. Gorsuch, died at 11:45 p. m. on Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Parkview Noble Hospital in Kendallville. She had been taken there on Friday from the Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla, where she had been a patient for the past six weeks.
Mrs. Gorsuch was born on April 15, 1916, in Smith Township, a daughter of Sanford and Alice L. (Richey) Gordon. On August 2, 1934, she was married to Dean W. Gorsuch, and was a lifelong resident of the Churubusco-area.
Formerly employed at Huntner Paris and Sears Roebuck & Company in Fort Wayne, she retired from the printing department at Dana Corporation in Churubusco. In her leisure time, she enjoyed caring for her home and yard, cooking, and enjoyed wintering with her husband in Leesburg, Florida. Most especially, she loved and enjoyed her family.
She was a member of the Churubusco United Methodist Church.
Mr. Gorsuch preceded her in death on February 6, 2003.
The surviving relatives include her sons Roger (Sharon) Gorsuch of Huntertown and Donald (Mariann) Gorsuch of Dripping Springs, Texas; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and spouse, she was preceded in death by five brothers Charles Gordon, Arthur Gordon, Roy Gordon, Lawrence Gordon, Elmer Gordon and David “Pete” Gordon; and by four sisters Nora Beights, Mary Crabill, Amy Fager, and Lori Gray.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a. m. on Wednesday, May 28, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Rev. Christine Newman-Jacobs, pastor of Churubusco United Methodist Church, officiating.

Lucy "Marie" Christlieb, 93

Lucy “Marie” Christlieb, 93, a resident of Garrett and widow of Milton W. Christlieb, died at 1:53 p. m. on Sunday, May 26, 2008, at DeKalb Memorial Hospital in Auburn. She had been in failing health since November.
Mrs. Christlieb was born in Etna-Troy Township near Lorraine in Whitley County on July 23, 1914, a daughter of Alan Edward and Edna Marie (Watters) Anderson. She moved to Libertyville, Illinois, as a young girl with her parents, and lived there for nine years before returning to this area.
On November 14, 1932, she was married in Churubusco to Milton W. Christlieb. The couple lived on a farm near Avilla following their marriage, and moved to DeKalb County in 1939. After selling their farm, the couple moved to Altona near Garrett in 1961.
She was a homemaker, and also assisted her husband in the operation of Altona Heating & Plumbing for several years. In her leisure time she enjoyed gardening, raising flowers and most especially loved and enjoyed her family.
Mr. Christlieb preceded her in death on November 27, 2001.
The surviving relatives include her daughters Vivian Marie (Max) DePew of Churubusco, Fay Ann Holbrook of Garrett, and Doris Jean Jones of Fort Wayne; a son Lee F. (Janice) Christlieb of Avilla; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Edward L. Anderson; a son-in-law Howard Holbrook; and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Wednesday, May 28, at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco with Jim Lilley of the First Church of Christ in Garrett, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the mortuary on Tuesday from 2-4 and from 6-8 p. m.
Interment will be in the Hooper-King Cemetery, southwest of Avilla.

Donna Brennenstuhl, 62

Donna Brennenstuhl, 62, of Churubusco, was called suddenly into the arms of her Lord and Savior on May 21, 2008.
Born in Fort Dix, NJ, she was a programmer, project manager with GTE Data Services for 26 years, retiring in 1999. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Purdue University in 1967. She was a docent for Fort Wayne Children's Zoo, active volunteer and member of Our Hope Lutheran Church. Donna enjoyed and helped build the Huntertown Cub Scouts. She was a dearly loved wife, mother, sister and friend.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband and best friend, David Brennenstuhl of Churubusco; son, Daniel Brennenstuhl, at home; brother, Bruce (Mary) Feay of Naperville, Illinois; and numerous extended family and friends.
A funeral service was held Saturday, May 24, at Our Hope Lutheran Church in Huntertown with Rev. Dr. Philip Schamehorn officiating. Burial was in Eel River Cemetery.

Michael Ray Wilson, 43

Michael Ray Wilson, age 43, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2008 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
Born on October 6, 1964 in Fort Wayne, IN, he was the son of David R. and Ruth D. (Mercer) Wilson. He attended Wayne High School in Fort Wayne.
A Fort Wayne native until 2000, when he moved to Columbia City, he was a former employee as a cook at Eagles Lodge #1906 and worked at the Columbia City Post & Mail.
On April 16, 2004, he married Lori Ile in Columbia City.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge #1906, Columbia City.
Survivors include his wife, Lori Ile of Columbia City; sons, Jack and Brian Wilson both of Fort Wayne; mother, Ruth D. Mercer of Fort Wayne; father, David R. (Marilyn) Wilson of Columbia City; step-brother, J. Blake (Courtney) Walker of Fort Wayne; step-sister, April C. (Stephen) Talamantes of Columbia City; and numerous aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Rex P. Mercer, Sr., uncles, Rex Mercer, Jr. and Terry Wilson, and mother-in-law, Sherrie Ile.
A memorial service is at 11 a.m. with 1 hour of visitation with the family prior to service on Monday, May 26, 2008 at Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 709 Business 30 W, Columbia City with Pastor Ross O'Dell officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Nolt Cemetery, Columbia City. Memorials may be given in Mr. Wilson's memory to the Wilson family. David Augustus Mitchell, 54

David Augustus Mitchell, age 54, passed away at 11:46 a.m. at his home on Thursday, May 22, 2008.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, on November 24, 1953, he was the son of Thomas W. and Ellen M. (Wilgus) Mitchell. He graduated with the Class of 1972 from Jackson High School, Jackson, Ohio, and he served in the United State Navy from 1972 to 1975. He completed his education in 1991 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Pastoral Ministries from Summit Christian College now known as Taylor University, Fort Wayne.
From 1998-2006, he was employed as an owner/operator for Smurfit-Stone Container and Transcorp., from 1994-1998 he worked as a driver for Transportation Resources & Management Inc., from November 5, 1988-1991, he pastored Thorncreek Church of God and he planted New Hope Wesleyan Church from 1984-1991.
On November 14, 1998, he was united in marriage to Tamara R. (Lemon) Sauers in Columbia City.
He was also a past board member for Right Side Christian School now known as Faith Christian Academy.
He attended Salem Community Bible Church and Gospel Ministries.
Survivors include his wife, Tamara R. Mitchell of Columbia City; sons, Kenneth (Elisa) Mitchell of Columbia City and Wesley Mitchell of Spring Hill, Florida; step-sons, Sie (Heide) Sauers of Wales, Wisconsin, and Scott Sauers of Columbia City; step-daughters, Sara Sauers of Orlando, Florida, and Sheila M. Sauers of Columbia City; a mother-in-law, Barbara Lemon of Columbia City; three grandchildren and a step-grandchild; two brothers and a sister.

Marguerite A. Miller, 87

Marguerite A. Miller, 87, formerly of South Whitley, died at 3:42 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City. She had been a resident at Miller’s Merry Manor in Columbia City since November 30, 2001.
She was born December 4, 1920, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of August H. and Pauline (Hengestler) Malich. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School, graduated from North Side high School in 1939 and continued her education at Manchester College.
On March 15, 1944, she enlisted in the United States Navy through the Great Lakes Naval Training Base. She was honorably discharged February 4, 1946.
She had been employed seven years at General Electric and three years at Wolf & Dessauer.
On April 12, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert M. Miller. They made their first home in Columbia City, later moving to South Whitley for the next 14 years and then Fort Wayne for 20 years. In 1979 they moved to Little Cedar Lake, north of Columbia City, where they had been spending their summers since 1959. In 1982, they returned to South Whitley. Mr. Miller died June 19, 1990.
Her memberships included St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and the Garden Club of South Whitley.
Surviving relatives include a son, Daniel Miller of Fairmount; two grandchildren, Max Riley Miller and Wendy Leigh Longacre; and a great-granddaughter, Cory Longacre.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Wilma Rhae and two brothers, Paul Malich and Irvin H. Malich.
The funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008 at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley with Rev. David Mommens, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, officiating. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Amy A. McKinney, 92

Amy A. McKinney, 92, of Columbia City, died at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008 at Parkview Whitley Hospital. She had been a resident at The Oaks Living Center since May 5, 2000.
She was born June 16, 1915, in Portland, Indiana, a daughter of Herman R. and Amelia Marie (Fox) Frank. In 1929, her family moved to Columbia City and established the H.R. Frank Greenhouse where she assisted in the operations for many years.
She graduated from Columbia City High School.
On October 16, 1938, she was united in marriage to Wayne W. McKinney. They made their first home in Larwill, later moving to Columbia City. They resided in South Bend for 12 years before returning to Columbia City in 1958. Mr. McKinney died December 15, 1986.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Sandra McKinney of South Bend, Jeanne (Dave) Guske of Avon Park, Florida and Dianne (Paul) Bravell of Fort Wayne; a son, Wayne Edmond McKinney of Safety Harbor, Florida; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Glenn Frank and Dale Frank, both of Columbia City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Wilson John Frank, Marcus Frank, Hugh Frank and Marion Frank; and two sisters, Evelyn Frank and Alice Frank.
The funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Dennis Beckner, pastor of Columbia City Church of the Brethren, officiate p.m. The burial will be in Stough Cemetery. The visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 Tuesday at the funeral home.

Kenneth D. Foster, 69

Kenneth D. Foster, age 69, died at 10:38 a.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at his home.
Born in Chicago, Cook County , Illinois, on August 25, 1938, he was the son of Douglas B. and Elizabeth (Mueller) Foster.
He graduated with the Class of 1956 from Glenbard High School , Glen Ellyn , Illinois. From 1956 to 1959, he served in the United States Marine Corp and completed his education with 2 years at Tri State College and 1½ years at Indiana Tech.
On September 15, 1962 he married Patricia A. Knight in Chicago. He and his wife lived in Allen County from 1962 until 1967 when they moved to Whitley County.
For 32 years he was employed by NIPSCO, retiring in 2000. His memberships included Whitley County Soil and Water Conservation District, Leatherneck Coffee Club of Northeast Indiana, the NIPSCO Club, past president of the Farm Bureau Organization and past president of the PTO in Coesse.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Patricia A. Foster of Columbia City; daughters, Kimberly (Glenn) Graves of Cedar Park, Texas, and Vicki (Jeff) Hinen of Columbia City; son, Neil (Marsha) Foster of Columbia City; five grandchildren, including Douglas Hinen, Adrianna Foster, Kaitlyn Foster, Kenneth Hinen and Ava Foster; a niece, Loraine Knudson of Florida and nephew, Gerald Foster of Chandler, Arizona.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth D. Foster II, brother, Oscar J. Foster and sister, Lorraine E. Foster.

Bryan L. Truman, 58, of Syracuse died at 6:56 p.m. Monday, May 19, 2008 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
He was born on July 20, 1949 in Fort Wayne  to James L. & Elizabeth (Harvey) Truman.
He graduated in 1968 from Columbia City High School and attended Eastfield Community College in Mesquite, Texas.
He grew up in Whitley County, moved to Texas in 1983 and then returned to the Syracuse area in 2002 from Dallas, Texas. On September 29, 1984 in Wylie, Texas, he married Margaret S. Edgil, who survives.
He was a self-employed truck driver and certified welder. He was a member of the Red Zone Christian Church in Enchanted Hills and the American Legion Post 253 in North Webster. He was a Vietnam Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Truman of Syracuse; a daughter, Heather (Charles) Rush of Syracuse; two sons – Brandon (Dawn) Truman of Cromwell and Bryce Truman of Syracuse; seven grandchildren. He is also survived by his mother and step-father, Betty & Robert Zumbrun of Columbia City; a brother – Barry A. (Kathy) Truman of Columbia City; two nephews & a niece
He was preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2008, at the Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2008 at the funeral home with Tim Stiffler of the church officiating. Arthur R. Waterson, age 61, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008.
A United States Army veteran, he was employed in the Maintenance Department for over 30 years at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN. He was an avid fisherman and golfer.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie Waterson of Columbia City; a daughter, Alexis (Timothy) Wash of Dora, Alabama; a son, Anthony (Amanda) Waterson of Louisville, Kentucky; his mother, Polita Waterson of Kendallville; 2 brothers, Richard (Linda) Waterson of Syracuse and Robert (LuAnn) Waterson of Morgantown, West Virginia; a sister, Ann (Walt) Brazel of Ligonier; and a granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Waterson.

Oscar Herman Busche, 89

Oscar Herman Busche, 89, of Albion, died early Monday, May 19, 2008, at Parkview Noble Hospital, Kendallville.
He enlisted as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp (C.C.C.) at the age of 17 and in 1940 he joined the Army serving in the South Pacific as member of the Bush Master Unit. This was a highly skilled unit of which he was proud to be a part of as a World War II Combat veteran.
Upon his return, he began a 40 year career as a long haul semi driver with favorite destinations in California and Texas. He drove throughout the United States only missing Maine out of the lower 48 states. He was a 30 year retired member of Teamster Local 414 out of Fort Wayne. He owned a mechanics garage in Ligonier area 1959 to 1962 and operated a dairy farm in the Albion area until the mid-seventies.
Born on May 8, 1919, he was one of nine children and the son of Fred Busche and Marie (Roush) Busche of Fort Wayne.
In his formative years, he attended St. Peter's Lutheran Church and School, in Fort Wayne. Upon his return from the war, he married Adeline Matilda Speakman on Feb.11, 1946. They moved to the Albion area in the mid-fifties. Recently he and Matilda have been living at North Ridge Village Retirement Center, Albion.
Some of his favorite activities included auctions, collecting tools and the reconditioning of tractors and trucks. He had a knack for refurbishing old pool tables to like new condition, and enjoyed socializing with family, friends and neighbors. He was a member of American Legion, Teamsters Local 414 and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Surviving are his wife, Adeline Matilda; sons, Dwight A. (Phyllis) Busche, Nick A. (Lori) Busche and Jerry A. Busche, all of Albion; daughter, Diane (Tim) Mock of Pierceton; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Surviving are brothers, Arthur of Spencerville and Frederick of Fort Wayne; a sister, Martha Essex of Columbia City; along with one half brother, Don Amstutz of New Haven.
He was preceded in death by his son, Oscar Herman "Hermie" Busche; sisters, Helen and Mildred; and brothers, Freeman Senior, Al and Kenneth; and one grandson.
Service is 10 a.m. Saturday at Brazzell Funeral Home, Albion. Viewing is from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Albion immediately following the service. Memorials to American Legion or Alzheimer's Association.

Charlotte A. Pittman, 87

Charlotte Alberta Pittman, 87, died at 6:43 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne. Mrs. Pittman had been in failing health for the past several months; however, she became suddenly ill on Tuesday and was taken to Lutheran Hospital.

Born on December 8, 1920, in Hamilton Township, Michigan, she was the daughter of Adam Bryan and Irene A. (Eggleston) Dayrenger.

She graduated from Ithaca High School with the Class of 1938.

On March 8, 1941, she married Ronald Eugene Pittman in Ithaca, Michigan. A former resident of Hemlock and St. John, Michigan, she moved to South Whitley in 2003.

A devoted wife and homemaker, she assisted her husband on the family farm and she worked as a nurse in Carson City, Michigan.

Survivors include a son, Gale E. (Rita) Pittman of South Whitley; a daughter, Peggy (Kenneth) Royer, Roswell, Georgia; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Marcel (Pat) Evitts of Ithaca, Michigan; and sister, Gene Dausette of Ithaca, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Adam and Irene Dayrenger, and step-mother, Cicle Dayrenger, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Ronald E. Pittman, who passed away on September 14, 2006, and a sister, Betty Helsel.

Visitation is 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with funeral service following at 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City. Pastor Harry Gates will officiate. Burial will follow at Nolt Cemetery in Columbia City.

Marjorie A. Kite, 87, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Born in Fort Wayne, she was an outstanding and loving homemaker. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and a graduate of Central Catholic High School. She loved her family, grandchildren, crocheting, flowers and dogs.
Survivors include sons, Patrick T. (Helen) Kite of Indianapolis, Dennis R. (Jane) Kite of Fort Wayne and Daniel K. (Patty) Kite of Churubusco; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anthony and Anna Brady Lauer; her husband, Richard D. Kite in 1993; son, Timothy J. Kite in 1974; brother, Anthony Lauer; and sister, Philomena Dunn.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Jude Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas Shoemaker officiating. The Rosary was recited on Sunday. Entombment took place in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne.

Carol R. Becher, 78, of Centerville, Ohio, and Fort Wayne, died Friday, May 16, 2008 at her home.
She was born on August 29, 1929 in Oak Park, Illinois, to Jacob and Marian Elliott Reininga.
She was a Programmer Analyst for North American Van Lines, retiring in 1994. She was a graduate of De Pauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
On May 2, 1952, Carol married William A. Becher of Fort Wayne.
She is survived by her four children, Ann B. (William) Schlosser of Plymouth, James A. (Dale) Becher of Fort Wayne, William A. (Gerri) Becker Jr. of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Nancy (Dave) Emerick of Columbia City. Also surviving are one brother; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceeded in death by her husband.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Roadwith calling two hours prior.

Sharon L. Jackson, 61, died Friday, May 16, 2008 at home.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and caregiver who loved spending time with her family. She was a blessing to all who knew her and she will be greatly missed.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Charles D. Wilson, 40, a resident of Richland Township, Whitley County, died at 8:55 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2008.
He was born May 26, 1967 in Fort Wayne, Indiana a son of Ronald Daniel and Marlyn E. (Calumba) Wilson. His formative years were spent in Fort Wayne. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School and continued his education at IPFW.
On October 16, 1986 he was united in marriage to Sarée A. Groce. They made their first home in Washington Township and have always made their home in Whitley County. They moved to their present home in 1992.
He was employed at Indiana State Highway Department, Hurd’s Auto Repair, Furrows Lumber Company, Blue Flame and currently for G & K Well Drilling.
His memberships include New Hope Wesleyan Church.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Sarée; two children, Ronald Daniel Wilson and Ashlee Adele Wilson, both of Columbia City; his mother and step father, Marlyn & Gary Flowers of South Whitley; three brothers, Bill DeHaven of Fort Wayne, Paul DeHaven of Greensburg and Tom DeHaven of Fort Wayne; a sister, Patty Parrish of Fort Wayne; and his father-in-law, William J. Groce of Columbia City.
He was preceded in death by his father; step-mother, Virginia Wilson; and a brother, Max DeHaven, Jr.

Dale O. Bitting, 86

Dale O. Bitting, 86, of Bradenton, Florida, died Sunday morning, May 18, 2008 at his home.
He was born January 19, 1922 in Noble County, a son of Benjamin F. and Mabel Ruth (Ott) Bitting. His formative years were spent in Thorncreek Township. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1940.
On September 22, 1942 he was inducted into the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged February 16, 1946.
On September 18, 1971 he was united in marriage to Donna M. (Yentes) Judy. They made their first home south of Columbia City. In October 1977 they moved to their home at Bayshore Windmill Village in Bradenton, Florida.
With a total of 31 years of banking service, he was employed at Citizens National Bank in Columbia City and began his employment at NCNB North Bank of Florida in Bradenton in March 1978, retiring in March 1988.
He was a member of Bayshore Covenant Church, a former 28 year member of Columbia City Kiwanis Club and a former member of Columbia City American Legion Post #98. An avid shuffleboard player, he competed in numerous tournaments.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Donna M. Bitting; two daughters, Roxanne (William) Thomas of Columbia City and Brenda (Craig) Schrader of Coldwater, Michigan; a step-daughter, Denise (Richard) Butler of Elkhart; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Jane Gradeless of Columbia City.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Bitting.

Fern E. Smith, 91, died at 9:56 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at Parkview Whitley Hospital Emergency Room.
Born on January 23, 1917 in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Earl and Lena (Schmidt) Berry. A lifetime resident of Whitley County, she graduated from Coesse High School with the Class of 1935.
On January 1, 1937, she married Robert J. Smith in Whitley County.
She worked for Blue Bell factory, Riverside Dairy, Montgomery Wards, Green Thumb and the Whitley County Council on Aging, retiring at the age of 86 in 2002.
She was a member of Oak Grove Church of God.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Deborah) Smith of Columbia City; four grandchildren, including Thad Smith of Fort Wayne, Jennifer Hill of Columbia City, Amanda Smith of Pierceton, Jacob and Joshua Smith both of Columbia City; and a cousin, Hildreth Keiser of North Webster.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert J. Smith in 1982, a sister, Ona Helfrich and a brother, Robert "Bobby" Berry.
