Robert E. Jones, 86, of Columbia City, died at 5:45 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2008, at Miller’s Merry Manor where he had been a resident since December 2007.
He was born July 17, 1922, in Huntington, a son of Scott E. and Fannie (Burkhart) Jones. As a young boy, his family moved to Columbia City. He graduated from Columbia City High School. On November 7, 1942, he was inducted in the United States Air Corps and served as a radio technician. He was honorably discharged October 8, 1945.
On November 8, 1952, he was united in marriage to Juanita Teel. They moved to their present home in Columbia City in 1960.
Prior to his employment with Dana Weatherhead, where he retired in 1984 with 32 years of service, he was employed at Blue Bell.
His memberships include American Legion Post #98 where he served as post commander from 1969 to 1971, V.F.W. Post #5582 and a former member of Eagles #1906.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Juanita; a son, Robert Scott Levi Jones of Columbia City; a sister, Betty J. Alred of North Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Jones; and three sisters, Doris Jones, Marjorie Jones and Dorothy Harding.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Larry Schmoekel officiating. The burial will be in Highland Park Cemetery, Fort Wayne. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
