Paul Newman, 82

Paul Newman, 82, of Columbia City, died Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Renaissance Village Nursing Home, Fort Wayne.

Born in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, on February 22, 1927, he was the son of Verle Newman and Agnes Flynn. He attended Central High School and on May 10, 1945, he enlisted in the US Army where he served his country in World War II.

On November 20, 1949 he married Lucille L. Doctor in Covington, Kentucky. She preceded him in death on September 16, 2005.

Mr. Newman was first employed at U.S. Rubber, Howard Sober Trucking, Salisbury Axel, Fruehauf Transport and then International Harvester where he retired from on July 31, 1983. After his retirement he worked for Omniplex World Service Corporation and Kelley Chevrolet in Fort Wayne.

He was raised in Illinois and Fort Wayne, moving to Columbia City in 1950.

He was a member of the Barnstormers Radio Aircraft Club and was involved with Midget Auto Racing as a race car driver; he also was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include two sons, Paul “Bud” Newman of Columbia City and Kenneth (Tracey) Newman of Lafayette; three daughters, Paula (M. Doyle) Acres of Howard, Colorado, Mar Dee (Andy) McCoy of Columbia City and Lou Ann (Bill) McCoy of Louisiana; a sister, Mary Irene Pinto of Chicago; step-sister, Naomi Horriage of Chicago; a daughter-in-law, Karen Newman; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille; a son, Greg Newman and an infant granddaughter, Baby Acres.

Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home in Columbia City. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the funeral home with Pastor Jeff Boyle of Coesse United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Union Township (Coesse) Cemetery, Columbia City. Memorials may be given in memory of Mr. Newman to Coesse United Methodist Church; envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
