Wilbur D. Rekeweg, 90, a resident of High Lake in rural Albion, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, in the Parkview Whitley Hospital in Columbia City following an extended illness.
Wilbur was born October 25, 1918 in Woodburn, a son of the late Arthur and Tena (Gerbers) Rekeweg. He spent his formative years on the family farm and was united in marriage on August 4, 1945 in Fort Wayne to Margaret B. Stein. They moved to their present home in 1974.
He was engaged in farming all of his life. His hobby’s included playing league horse shoes in the Albion, Kimmel, and Columbia City areas and loved to fish. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Churubusco.
His survivors include his wife of 63 years Margaret; his children Diann (Delart) Tewes of New Bloomfield, Missouri, Wayne (companion Danni Smith) Rekeweg of Fort Wayne, Paul (Nettie) Rekeweg of Woodburn, and Glen (Christine) Rekeweg of Coldwater, Michigan; two sisters Lucille Reinking of Leo and Lavon Koenemann of Woodburn. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Raymond Rekeweg.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Faith Lutheran in Churubusco, with Pastor Lane Burgland officiating. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Church in Woodburn.
