Arthur William Walter, 92, formerly of Whitley County, died at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at Norwood Nursing Center, Huntington where he had been a resident since June 2007.

He was born April 22, 1917, in Whitley County, Indiana a son of Lewis and Ida R. (Frederick) Walter.

On February 9, 1940, he was united in marriage to Netha A. Martz. They resided in Whitley County, later moving to Huntington.

He was employed at W.A. Jones in Columbia City, was a rural deliverer for The Post & Mail and retired from Explorer Van in Warsaw.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Netha; nine children, Beverly Hatfield, Carol (Walter) Rowland, Margaret (C. David) Kilgore and James (Elizabeth) Walter, all of Columbia City, Stephen Walter of Texas, Gary Walter of Columbia City, Randall (Kim) Walter of Gas City, Franklin Walter of South Whitley and Tina (Joseph) Kocher of Huntington; 27 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Walter; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

The funeral service will be held at 12 Noon Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon Saturday at the funeral home.
