Charles Q. Callahan, 90

Charles Q. Callahan, 90, of Columbia City, died at 3:30 a.m. Sunday, December 27, 2009 at Renaissance Village where he had been a resident since May 2009.

He was born July 29, 1919, in Pawnee County, Oklahoma, a son of Jesse and Florence (Gross) Callahan. In 1929, his family moved to Indiana. He graduated from Portland High School and Indiana Technical College in Fort Wayne.

On May 29, 1941, he was united in marriage to Mary Ruth Spade. They made their home in Portland for a short time before moving to Fort Wayne. In December 1975, they moved to Union Township, Whitley County. Mrs. Callahan died September 23, 1992. In September 2006, Charlie moved into Columbia City.

A United States Navy veteran, he was honorably discharged October 19, 1945.

He retired from I.T.T. in 1981 with 29 years of service.

His memberships included Trinity Presbyterian Church and formerly the Amateur Radio Club.

Surviving relatives include four children, D. Michael (Elizabeth) Callahan of Katy, Texas; Bonnie Platz of Columbia City, Christopher L. (Kathy) Callahan of Atlanta, Georgia; and Beth (Brian) Link of Jacksonville, Florida; seven grandchildren, including Patrick & Megan, Molly, Mark & Greg, and Jessica & Peter; eight great-grandchildren, including Alex & Wesley, Joshua & Caleb, Gavin, Elijah & Sidney and Katy; and two nieces, Ruthie Wallace and Salome Moon.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The committal service will begin at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bryant, IN.

Preferred memorials are to Peabody Public Library.
