Joseph D. Lumm, 85

Joseph D. Lumm, 85, of Columbia City, died at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, December 13, 2009 at The Oaks Living Center where he had been a resident since March 20, 2009.

He was born August 20, 1924, in Lagrange, a son of Joseph H. and Aimee M. (McOscar) Lumm. His formative years were spent in Lagrange. He graduated from Lagrange High School.
In 1943, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1945. In 1946 he moved to Avilla.
On September 3, 1948, he was united in marriage to Eileen F. Irons. They made their first home in Kendallville.

His employment with United Telephone Company of Indiana Inc. transferred him and his family throughout Northern Indiana before settling in January 1965 in Columbia City. He retired October 1, 1983 with over 39 years of service.
His memberships included Columbia City United Methodist Church, Avilla Lodge #460 Free & Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite, Mizpah Shrine and Whitley County Shrine Club.
Surviving relatives include a son, John M. (Rita) Lumm of Lexington, Ohio; a daughter, Catherine S. (Melvin) Reeg of Columbia City; four grandchildren, Ryan D. (Lori) Lumm, Abby M. Lumm, Melanie K. Reeg and Gavin M. Reeg; and a sister, Ruth Irene Fry of Goshen.
In addition to his wife of nearly 59 years, Eileen, who died August 11, 2007, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Alma Lumm.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, December 16, 2009, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial was in Nolt Cemetery.
A Masonic Service was held Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at the funeral home.
