Eugene C. Ness, 78
Eugene C. Ness, 78, of Columbia City, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, May 19, 2010 at his home. 
He was born October 2, 1931 in Whitley County, Indiana a son of Edward P. and Florence C. (Harkenrider) Ness. His formative years were spent in Washington Township. He graduated from Washington Center High School.
During the Korean Conflict, he served in the United States Marine Corps.
On October 4, 1958 he was united in marriage to Marjory J. Furthmiller. They made their home in Roanoke for a short time and Waynedale for a couple years before moving to their home in Columbia City in 1966.
He was employed at Harvester from 1955 until 1985 and was the custodian at St. Paul of the Cross from 1986 until 1998.
His memberships included St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, V.F.W. #10,006 where he served as post commander in 1964, American Legion Post #98, Eagles Lodge #1906, Leatherneck Coffee Club and an avid supporter of Columbia City Athletics.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Marjory; a son, Gregory A. (Christine) Ness of Columbia City; two grandchildren, Lauren Ness and Ryan Ness; and two sisters, Adella (Bernard) Reust of Huntington and LaDonna Schroeder of Ligonier.
He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Ness and a brother, Lloyd Ness.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 S. Line Street, Columbia City with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. The burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Friday.
