William M. Palmer, 81
William M. Palmer, 81, of Columbia City, died Thursday morning, May 6, 2010 at his home. He had been in failing health for the past six months.
He was born February 21, 1929 in Mishawaka, Indiana a son of Clyde G. and Kathryn (Chappell) Palmer. In 1942 his family moved to Noble County. He graduated from Churubusco High School.
On June 26, 1949 he was united in marriage to Helen L. Gerard. They made their home in Columbia City moving to their present home in 1997.
In 1949 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged November 21, 1957.
He was employed at General Electric in Fort Wayne from 1952 until 1958 when he began his employment at Weatherhead Dana, retiring in 1990. He then worked for Copp Farm Supply for 17 years.
His memberships included Columbia City United Methodist Church and he was a charter member of Whitley County Barnstormers Radio Control Club.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Helen; a daughter and a son, Cheryl (Michael) Copp and David (Malinda) Palmer, all of Columbia City; five granddaughters; 10 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Ila Alwine of Goshen and Ellen (Bert) Thompson of Wheaton, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by a great granddaughter and two sisters, Carol Clayton and Bette Kauffman.
The funeral service were held Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial was in South Park Annex Cemetery.
