Max Edwin Reed, 86
Max Edwin Reed, 86, of Columbia City, died Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne where he was admitted Monday, July 19.
He was born September 3, 1923 in Whitley County, Indiana a son of Raymond and Dica (Ott) Reed. With the exception of a couple of years in Fort Wayne, he spent his lifetime in Whitley County. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1941.
On September 5, 1943 he was united in marriage to Bette J. Bell. In December 1943, he joined his father and brother at Reed Shoe Store. In 1967, he and his wife took over ownership until its closing in 1989.
His memberships included Columbia City United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, Columbia City Lodge #189 Free & Accepted Masons for more than 50 years and a former member of Columbia City Rotary for 30 years.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Bette; three daughters, Sharon (Tom) Laird of Boca Raton FL, Christine (Jim) Chaffins of Geneva and Diana (Larry) Graves of Rochester Hills MI; seven grandchildren, Chad Chaffins, Shanyn Wetsel, Lesli Chaffins, Kathleen Potts, Melanie Cussen, Lecretia Graves and Rachelle Graves; and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry Reed and Roy Reed; and a sister, Evelyn Boyer.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Columbia City United Methodist Church Building Fund.
