Barbara Ann Smith, 70
Barbara Ann Smith, 70, of Columbia City, died early Sunday morning, September 19, 2010 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne where she was admitted Saturday. She had been in failing health.
She was born May 16, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan a daughter of James C. F. and Winifred B. (Kettle) Barker. Her formative years were spent in Detroit.
On October 6, 1964 she married John D. Malott Sr. They made their home in Tucson, Arizona later residing in various areas throughout the United States before returning to Tucson in 1997. Mr. Malott died March 19, 1999.
In 2001 she moved to Columbia City. On December 29, 2002 she married Richard L. "Smitty" Smith. They always made their home in Columbia City. Mr. Smith died August 4, 2007.
A homemaker, her memberships included American Legion Post #98 Auxiliary, V.F.W. Post #5582 Auxiliary, Eagles Lodge #1906 Auxiliary and Women of the Moose #861.
Surviving relatives include a son, John D. Malott of Columbia City; two daughters, Robin Malott of Three Points, Arizona and Mary Gibson of West Virginia; a step son, Thomas J. Smith of Columbia City; a step daughter, Tammy J. Smith of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Marjorie Lorang of Tucson, Arizona and Shirley Napier of Berkley, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Kautz; four sisters, Alberta Ossa, Winnie Johnson, Mary Barker and Marie Barker; and two brothers, James Barker Jr. and Thomas Barker.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Cemetery. The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Humane Society of Whitley County.
