John M. “Big John” Clawson, 76

John M. “Big John” Clawson, 76, of Columbia City, died at 2:38 a.m. Sunday, September 5, 2010 at his home.
He was born October 30, 1933 in Marion, Grant County, Indiana a son of John R. and Edith M. (Chappell) Clawson. His formative years were spent in Marion.
On October 31, 1949 he enlisted in the United States Navy, receiving a Purple Heart during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged February 10, 1953.
On March 24, 1978 he married Balinda K. “Lynn” Kahlenbeck. They made their home in Fort Wayne, Ligonier and Waynedale before moving to Columbia City in the 1980s.
Well known for his love of dogs, he was the animal control officer for Columbia City for many years.
He also enjoyed classical music, opera, drawing and fishing.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Lynn and canine companion, Tito.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date at Grace Lutheran Church. There will be no visitation.
Preferred memorials may be directed the final expense account at Smith & Sons Funeral Home.
Arrangements are being completed at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.
