Madeline Mary Bordine, 86

Madeline Mary Bordine, 86, a resident of  Miller’s Merry Manor in Columbia City since 2006, died there at 2:05 p. m. on Sunday November 28, 2010.  She formerly lived in Churubusco since 1998.
Madeline was born on May 5, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, a daughter of the late Paul William and Celia (Kowalski) Bloom.  She grew up in Detroit and spent most of her adult life there.  She worked at Lincoln Motor Division of Ford Motor Co. and at Curtis Industrial in Southfield, Michigan.
She was united in marriage in February 1946 to Max Zaler,  who preceded her in death in 1998.  She enjoyed square dancing, round dancing and ballroom dancing, and attended St. John Bosco Catholic Church in Churubusco.
Her survivors include her son Douglas (Tamara) Zaler of Plano, Texas and her daughter Barbara (Gary) Meyer of Churubusco;  four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren;  a brother David Bloom of Reford Twp. Michigan; and sister Rita Ramage of Garden Grove California.
Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by two sisters Doris Tarcynski and Gladys Hise.
Honoring Madeline’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services.
Entombment will be at a later date in the Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park Cemetery in Lavonia, Michigan.
The arrangements have been entrusted to the Sheets and Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco.

Logan E. "Bubba" Templeton, 21

Logan E. "Bubba" Templeton, 21, of Columbia City, Ind., died on Saturday, November 27, 2010 due to injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.  
He was born on June 23, 1989 to Carson E. and Tamera M. (Schinbeckler) Templeton.
A 2008 graduate of Churubusco High School, he was currently employed at C & A Tool as a machine mechanic since 2007.  
Logan was also enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College in the welding program.  He was a lifetime resident of Whitley County and was active in FFA and 4H for nine years.
He is survived by his parents, Carson and Tamera Templeton of Columbia City, Ind.; brother, Riley C. Templeton of Columbia City; grandmother, Patricia Liggett and grandparents, Harold and Judy Schinbeckler all of Churubusco, Ind.  
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Everett Liggett, Sr. and Donald Templeton.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, Ind.  Funeral service will take place on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Sharon Brockhaus, GSP, CFC officiating.
Memorials in memory of Logan can be made to Riley Children's Hospital.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Tony L. Gaff, 91

Tony L. Gaff, 91, of rural Larwill, died at 5:50 p.m. Friday, November 26, 2010 at Parkview Main, Fort Wayne where he had been admitted on Sunday.
He was born April 6, 1919 in Whitley County a son of Harry H. and Viva (Pippenger) Gaff. He spent his formative years in Churubusco and graduated from Churubusco High School.
On April 9, 1944 he was united in marriage to E. Louise Hively, they made their home in Jefferson Twp.
In 1944, he also began his career at International Harvester, Fort Wayne. An office worker, he retired as a Materials Manager in 1981. In 1989, they moved to their present home outside of Larwill. He was a member of First Church of God, Columbia City.
Surviving relatives include his wife of 66 years, E. Louise; two sons, Stan Gaff, Larwill and Ron (Jenny) Gaff, Quezon City, Philippines; two daughters, Rosalind (Eugene) Klingaman, Columbia City and Jeanette (Joseph) Jordan, Columbia City; 13 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a half sister, Marilyn Hull, South Whitley and two half-brothers Garland Link, Waterloo and Everett (Cheryl) Link, Phoenix, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Toni Elaine Norden and Linda Lou Gaff; two brothers, Wilbur and Herman Gaff, and a half-sister, Bonnie Link.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Pastor Tim Grable of Sugar Grove Church of God officiating. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to International Graduate School of Leadership, a Campus Crusade for Christ ministry.

Keith E. "Sonny" Cleland, 82

Keith E. "Sonny" Cleland, 82, of rural Larwill died at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at Miller’s Merry Manor where he had been a resident since September.
He was born July 30, 1928 in Columbia City, Indiana a son of Carl and Ester Cleland. He spent his formative years in Columbia City and graduated from Columbia City High School.
Following his graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a corporal in the Korean War.
On February 14, 1959, he was united in marriage to Joyce A. Menzie. The made their home outside of Larwill.
He was employed by Whitley Products, Columbia City and then Pierceton for 45 years. He retired as a foreman in 1989. He was a member of American Legion Post 98 and an avid Notre Dame fan.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joyce; two children, Debbie Thornhill, New Castle and David Cleland, South Whitley; four grandchildren, Andrew R. Cleland, South Whitley, Adam Ressler, Spencerville, Vanessa (Billy) Anderson, Fort Wayne and Annie (Chad) Tipmore, Sarasota, FL.
In addition to his parents, a sister, Rosalie VanWey preceded him in death.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, December 12, 2010 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with visitation from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.

Rev. Mr. Milton Webster Folds, Jr., 84

Rev. Mr. Milton Webster Folds, Jr., 84, of Churubusco, IN passed away at 4:26 p.m. on Friday, November 26, 2010 at his residence.  
Born on February 6, 1926 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of Milton Webster Sr. and Jessie (Deacon) Folds.
He lived in Columbia City from 1982-1998 then from 1998-2009 he resided in Churubusco and Phoenix, AZ returning to Churubusco in 2009.  
He graduated from South Shore High School, Chicago, IL with the Class of 1944 and received his Masters of Theology Degree from Notre Dame in 1975.  
On August 15, 1950, he married Beverly J. East in St. John, IN.  
He served in the United States Army as a medical corpsman and also a drummer in the post marching band and dance orchestra.  He worked at New York Life Insurance Co., Fort Wayne, from 1965-1975 and then in 1975 he started his own insurance agency, Milt Folds and Assoc. Insurance, Columbia City, retiring in 1993.  
He was a member of St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Churubusco; an ordained Deacon in the Roman Catholic Church; a founder the Columbia City Curtain Company Players; founder of the Right Side Foundation now known as Faith Christian Academy; a member of the Board of Directors of the Fort Wayne Civic Theater and a 9 time Anthony Award Winner.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly J. Folds of Churubusco, IN; 7 children, Milton W. (Cathy) Folds, III of Winona Lake, IN;  Joseph P. (Antonia) Folds of Churubusco, IN;  Mary (Arnold) Reyling of Decatur, IN; Blaise (Kevin) Moore of Fort Wayne, IN;  Mercy (Phillip) Weigmann of Fort Wayne, IN;  Michael I. (Kimberly) Folds of Southern Shores, NC;  and Dorothy (Joseph, Sr.) Cochran of Columbia City;  27 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.  
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Dorothy E. Harn and Jessie Mary Mangrum, and a grandson, Jack Wedler.
Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN with a prayer vigil at 6:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 with one hour of visitation prior to the service at St. John Bosco, 216 N. Main Street, Churubusco, IN with Father Danney Pinto as celebrant.  Burial will follow at a later date.  
Memorials may be given in memory of Rev. Mr. Folds to Faith Christian Academy.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Howard L. "Windy" Wolfe, 93

Howard L. "Windy" Wolfe, 93, formerly of South Whitley, Ind., passed away on Thursday, November 25, 2010 at Peabody Retirement Center, North Manchester, Ind.  
Born on June 18, 1917 in Columbia Township, he was the son of Grover and Effie (Stayer) Wolfe.
He attended high school at the former Pierceton High School, graduating with the Class of 1936.  His family moved to Kosciusko County when he was a year old, and his formative years were spent in Washington Township, Kosciusko County and he later lived in Larwill and Umatilla, FL.  He moved to South Whitley in 1986.  He served in the US Army as a member of the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945.  
He was united in marriage to Bertha Hill on January 19, 1942 in Warsaw, Ind.; she preceded him in death in 1977.  On May 11, 1979 he was married to Beulah L. Dalton, who precedes him in death.  He worked at Morsches Lumber Company as a delivery truck driver and yard foreman for 37 years, retiring in 1982.  He attended the Larwill United Methodist Church and was a member of the American Legion Post #98, Columbia City.
He is survived by three sons, Larry G. Wolfe of Larwill, Ind., Jack (Lana) Wolfe of Sidney, Ind., and Gary Wolfe, of Columbia City; two daughters, Marjorie (Fred) Frost of Niles, MI, and Vickie (Douglas) Swick of Fort Wayne, Ind.; 14 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Bertha and second wife, Beulah; a grandson, Brian Howard; and brother, Herman Wolfe.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 from 9:30 a.m. until time of the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Dr., Columbia City, Ind.  Pastor Gene Rohere of Oak Grove United Methodist Church will officiate.  Memorials in memory of Mr. Wolfe may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.  Burial will follow at Washington-Union Township Cemetery, Pierceton, Ind.  
Graveside military rights will be conducted by the Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

Ralph Earl Galway, 89

Ralph Earl Galway, 89, of Columbia City, Ind. died at 9:35 p.m. on Thursday, November 25, 2010 at the home of his daughter in Columbia City (Big Lake), Ind.  Born on October 29, 1921 in Marion, Ind. he was the son of the late Ralph I. and Mattie M. (Iliff) Galway.
A graduate of Marion High School, he then enlisted in the US Navy and later in the US Air Force where he served for 22 years.   Born and raised in Marion, he lived there the majority of his life except while in the service.  In 2003 he moved to Columbia City to be closer to his family.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah (Donald) Law and Sharon (Robert) Stephens of Columbia City, Barbara Galway of Huntington, Ind.; and son, Ronald (Vanessa) Galway of Union City, Ind.; 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; brother, Floyd Galway of Salt Lake City, UT; and his beloved cat, Blackie.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private family service will be held at the Marion National Cemetery, Marion, Ind. at a later date.  In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in Mr. Galway's name be made to the Whitley County Humane Society.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.  Arrangements were entrusted to DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, Ind.

Dorothy L. Easterday, 65

Dorothy L. Easterday, 65, a resident at the Northridge Village Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Albion for the past several years, past away there onWednesday November 24, 2010 following an extended illness.
She had previously lived on North Orange Street in Albion and prior to that in Butler.
Dorothy was born on June 16, 1945 in Hammond, a daughter of the late Howard and Minor (Moverhill) Hays.  She was married on January 1, 1991 in Butler to Jerry L. Easterday, and was a homemaker.
Surviving in addition to her husband Jerry are  her children David (Jenni) Hayes and Kelly Hayes both of Kendallville, Howard Hayes of Three Rivers, Mich., Timothy Hayes of Orbin, Kansas, Jerry Leon (Karen) Easterday of Fremont, Betty (Kevin)  Earle of Wheatfield, Susan Hayes of Lowell, and Renee Christine (Mark) Logan of Plainfield. Also surviving is one brother Joe (Shirley) Hays of Munster; and 18 grandchildren.
The family is following Dorothy’s last wishes by not haveing any calling hours or service.  A memorial service may be planned in the future.

Kathleen A. Rupert, 83

Kathleen A. Rupert, 83, of Columbia City, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Miller's Merry Manor.
She was born September 24, 1927 in Toledo, Ohio a daughter of Howard and Elizabeth (Gallaway) Hilyard. As an infant, her family moved to Fort Wayne. She graduated from Central High School.
In 1949 she was united in marriage to William T. Rupert. They made their home in Fort Wayne until 1953 when they moved to Whitley County, moving into Columbia City in 1989. Mr. Rupert died December 18, 1992.
She worked at Whitley County Council on Aging for a couple years in the mid 1970s and was instrumental in beginning the thrift shop Stop-n-Shop, later Bargain Basement and more recently Second Time Around until its closing.
Her memberships included American Legion Post #98 Auxiliary.
Surviving relatives include three sons, Craig (Christine) Itt of Fort Wayne, Casey (Edna) Rupert of Winona Lake and Lowell "Sam" (Theresa) Rupert of Columbia City; a daughter, Laura (James) Foley of Alanson MI; a step son, Dan Rupert of Tacoma WA; a step daughter, Sharon (Larry) Roberts of Nashville IN; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a sister, Carolyn Parker of Columbia City; and a brother, Roger Hilyard of Fresno CA.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Molly A. Rupert and Gretchen Rupert.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Merritt Asa Eatherton, 84

Merritt Asa Eatherton, 84, of Columbia City, IN went quickly, but safely and peacefully home to his Lord and Saviour at Parkview Whitley Emergency Room, Columbia City at 3:37 am Sunday, November 21, 2010.
He was born on September 9, 1926 in Fostoria, OH the son of Asa Brayton and Nora Mae (Vanderhoff) Eatherton.
Merritt was raised in Fostoria and Wharton areas and graduated from Wharton High School with the Class of 1944. He proudly served in United States Navy and on April 23, 1947 he married the love of his life, Maxine Joan Corbin at the Wharton Church of God parsonage. They began their married life by operating an 80 acre dairy farm for many years, in the meantime, he also worked for Cobey Farm Equipment and other Cobey enterprises in Bucyrus, Kenton and Gallion, OH. He retired after 20 years service as the Vice President and General Manager of Eagle Crusher in Gallion. In 2004 he and his wife moved to Columbia City to be near family. He was a member of Wharton and Columbia City Churches of God. At the Wharton Church of God he served as an Elder for 32 years, Sunday School Superintendent for 15 years, Sunday School Teacher for 20+ years, Deacon and Chairman of Church Board. He also had an amazing 54 years of perfect attendance at the Wharton Church of God. For the Ohio Conference of the Churches of God he served on the Board of Finance as Treasurer, Financial Secretary, President of Layman’s Association and on the Executive Board as Member at Large. He also taught and served as a Dean at Camp Otyokwah . For the Churches of God General Conference, he served as President of C.G.W.B for 6 years, delegate to General Conference and for several years he served as Trustee of Winebrenner Seminary, Findlay, OH where he also attended classes to further his education. He was a very active member of the Wyandot County Camp of Gideon’s International, before moving to Indiana in 2004 to be near family. Merritt was an avid Ohio State sports fan. He enjoyed taking his grandchildren to sporting events and he loved anything shared with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Maxine Joan Eatherton, Columbia City; 2 children, Bob (Deb) Eatherton of Columbia City and David (Bethany) James, Grandview, TN; 3 grandchildren including, April (Stephen) Isar and Christin (Adam) Jones both of Fort Wayne and Jennie James, Lincoln, NE; 3 great grandchildren, Alissa Mae Isar, Sierra Dahlia Isar and Joanna Maxine Jones all of Fort Wayne; 1 brother, Dale Lavern Eatherton, Fostoria  and 1 sister, Ruth Louise Mathias, Fostoria. He is preceded in death by 1 brother, Maynard Francis Eatherton and 2 sisters, Olive Mae Rathbunn-Gilhouse-Gilette-Kimble and Janet Kay Krupp-Stock.
Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 23, 2010 and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 both at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastors Jim Martin and Johnny McCallister, of the First Church of God, Columbia City, officiating. Visitation will also be held at the Wharton Church of God, Cass Road, Wharton, OH on Saturday, November 27, 2010 from 10-11:30 a.m. with funeral service immediately following with Pastor Joe Carney, officiating. Committal services with military graveside rites will follow in the Wharton-Richland-Union Cemetery, Wharton.

Worth Wilson Waugh, 99

Worth Wilson Waugh, 99, of Columbia City, died at 8:45 a.m. Monday, November 22, 2010 at Miller's Merry Manor where he had been a resident for the past few months.
He was born January 30, 1911 in Thorncreek Township, Whitley County a son of Charles Leigh and Ethel Gertrude (Humbarger) Waugh. A lifelong resident of Whitley County, he graduated from Columbia City High School in 1929 where he played football and was in the Junior Class play.
On December 16, 1941 he was united in marriage to Blanche A. Toucha. Mrs. Waugh died December 23, 1999. In 2000 he moved to Oak Pointe from his home of 54 years on Chauncey Street.
He served in the First Armored Division (Old Ironsides) of the United States Army in North Africa during World War II. He performed before King George and Queen Elizabeth in a demonstration of anti-tank weaponry putting 14 out of 15 shells in a moving target. He was honorably discharged June 23, 1945.
He was the third employee hired at Weatherhead, Columbia City from which he retired as tool room foreman in 1973.
Following his retirement, he and his wife became members of the Wally Byam Airstream Club and traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico and Canada in their Airstream trailer. In their latter years they wintered in the Airstream Trailer Park in Melbourne, Florida. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed netting shrimp.
His memberships also included First Church of God and American Legion Post #98.
Surviving relatives include a son, Richard (Lois) Waugh of Manson NC; two grandsons, Dan (Vickie) Waugh of Chapel Hill NC and Tim (Jennifer) Waugh of Mundelein IL; four great grandchildren, Grace, Jacob, Emily and Samantha; and a niece, Ethel Ann Miller.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Phillip R. Waugh and a sister, Ellen Waugh.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation after 12 Noon Saturday. The burial will be in Blue River Cemetery with military honors presented by Whitley County Korean War Veterans Honor Guard.

Thelma L. Jacobs, 90

Thelma L. Jacobs, 90, of South Whitley, died Monday morning, November 22, 2010 at her home.
She was born March 6, 1920 in Kosciusko County, Indiana a daughter of James Jacob and Lena Belle (Crim) Aughinbaugh. As a young girl, her family moved to South Whitley. She completed her education at South Whitley High School.
She was employed at Blue Bell for a period of time.
On November 7, 1936 she was united in marriage to Walter Jacobs. They made their home in Gary for a year, South Whitley for four years, North Manchester and later Laketon before moving to a farm east of South Whitley in 1947. In 1968 they moved into South Whitley. Mr. Jacobs died April 5, 1992.
Surviving relatives include a son, Larry Jacobs of Columbia City.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, James Aughinbaugh Jr.
The graveside service will be held at 12 Noon Friday at South Whitley Cemetery.
Preferred memorials may be directed to the final expense account at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.

Edna A. Duff, 84

Edna A. Duff, 84, of Columbia City, died at 8:10 p.m. Sunday, November 21, 2010 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since October 29.
She was born November 27, 1925 in Perry County, Kentucky a daughter of Buddy and Mary Elizabeth (DeBoard) Daniels. Her formative years were spent in Perry County.
On November 28, 1942 she was united in marriage to Edward E. “Mose” Duff. They resided in Perry County area until 1963 when they moved to Columbia City. Mr. Duff died December 19, 2008.
From 1963 until 1974 she was employed at Dana in Churubusco.
Her memberships included Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Mary Sue (Jerry) Spencer of Indianapolis and Patricia (Jack) Horn of Columbia City; two sons, Joe Duff of Columbia City and Harold (Linda) Duff of Brownsville, Texas; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Willa Mae McIntosh and Hazel Thompson, both of Columbia City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward "Bud" Duff, two sisters and seven brothers.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation after 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The burial will be in South Park Cemetery.

Thelma Evelyn Wolfe, 102

Thelma Evelyn Wolfe, 102, of Columbia City, died at 8:50 a.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010 at The Oaks Living Center where she had been a resident since September.
She was born February 12, 1908 near Essex, Missouri a daughter of James Monroe and Sadie L. (Carlew) Dillard. Her formative years were spent in Missouri.
On February 18, 1929 she was united in marriage to Henry Kenneth Wolfe in Parma, Missouri. They moved to Fort Wayne until 1931 when they moved to Columbia Township, Whitley County. They later resided in Thorncreek Township for a year before moving to the Wolfe Family Farm in 1939. Mr. Wolfe died January 12, 1972. In 1987 Thelma moved into Columbia City.
A homemaker, her beautiful needle work, tatting and quilting have been enjoyed by many.
Her memberships included Oak Grove United Methodist Church, Columbia City Women's Bowling League since 1960 and American War Mothers since 1952.
Surviving relatives include a son, Larry W. (Pauline) Wolfe of Cut Bank MT; a daughter-in-law, Margaret Wolfe of Washington Courthouse OH; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond Dillard of Flint MI.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Floyd G. Wolfe; two grandchildren; three brothers, James Monroe Dillard Jr., Clyde L. Dillard and Donald Dillard; and six sisters, Wilma Wallace, Vivian Ilene Statler, Nina Marie Ports, Norma Eloise Cochrin, Freda Bromfield and Marie Angel.

Martin H. Trier, 85

Martin H. Trier, 85, a resident of Columbia City, died at 12:30 pm Monday, November 15, 2010 at Miller’s Merry Manor.
He was born July 15, 1925 in Washington Twp, Whitley County, Indiana a son of Martin E. and Lulu (Kunberger) Trier. His formative years were spent in Washington Twp.  He graduated from Washington Center High School.  
On July 14, 1962, he was united in marriage to Naomi Edith Mitchell.  They made their home in Columbia City.  Mrs. Trier died December 3, 2000.
In 1950, he was employed by International Harvester, Fort Wayne, where he worked for 32 years.  In 1987, he went to work for Pinkerton / ISI Security, Fort Wayne until his retirement in 1997.   
He is survived by five children, Linda (Robert) LeFever, Churubusco, Steven (Lora) Trier of Arizona, Rebecca (Monty) Wolfe of Florida, Terry Trier of Michigan and Mark Trier of Florida; two step-daughters, Lana (John) Pratt, Warsaw and Leatha Brown, Warsaw; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and a brother, Walter Trier, South Whitley.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Eleanora Auer, Ruth Bay, Martha Luecke, Neola Trump, Marie Bridge and a brother Ordine Trier, and a Stepson, Larry Line.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. with Dr. Lane Burgland officiating.  The burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

William C. “Bill” Sprowl, 61

William "Bill" Chester Sprowl, 61, of Columbia City, Ind., died at 9:52 a.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at his residence. 
Born April 26, 1949 in Marion, IN he was the son of Chester H. and Charlotte May (Carter) Sprowl.
Born and raised in Marion, he graduated with the Class of 1967 from Mississinewa High School, Gas City.
A resident of Grant County the majority of his lifetime, he moved to Columbia City in 1994. A general farmer from 1980 - 1994, he served on the Marion Police Department for ten years from 1969-1979 and he was a former supervisor at Bosch Automotive for ten years retiring in 2006.
On February, 24, 2007 he married Renee` Herendeen in Columbia City. His memberships included Masonic Lodge, Jonesboro; Shriners Fort Wayne Lodge and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Survivors include his wife, Renee` Sprowl of Columbia City; son, Billy (Angie) Grubb of Fairmount; daughter, Becki (Brad) Dailey of Gas City; step-daughters, Raven (Joe Harter) Herendeen of Churubusco, Crystal (Trent) Fulk of Columbia City and Melissa (Jason Watson) Herendeen of Columbia City; step-son, Matthew (Robin Wienbrenner) Herendeen of Columbia City; father, Chester H. Sprowl, of Gas City; brother, Phil (Linda Beal) Alleman of Marion; sisters, Janet Davis of Hennessey, OK, Farol Stanley of Lakeland, FL, Dianne Wagner of Gray, TN, Cinda (Larry) Moorefield of Delphos, OH, Brenda (Jeff) Schroeder of Benita, OK and Janice Miller of Bluffton; 14 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte Sprowl in 2003 and a sister, Norma Wingfield.

Delmar “Del” Auer, 80

Delmar “Del” Auer, 80, of rural Columbia City, died at 1:37 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2010 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
He was born December 10, 1929 in Whitley County, Indiana, Indiana a son of John and Frances (Flaugher) Auer.  His formative years were spent in Columbia City.  He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1948.  He then completed his Associates Degree at International Business College, Fort Wayne.
He started his career at manager of the Sears Catalog Store and then as owner/manager of Auer Oil Company retail outlet for 10 years.  He then received his auctioneers and brokers license and started Auer & Davison Realtors which he ran for 20 years.  He developed Brookwood Estates subdivision and Lincoln Hills subdivision.  He completed his work career as a field Auditor with the Indiana Dept of Revenue and finally as manager of Indiana Dept of Transportation Warsaw sub-district.
In addition to his work career, he was the Indiana State Representative from 1974 to 1980 during which he served on Ways and Means Committee, Natural Resources and Public Safety among others.  He served as a member of State Tax and Finance Policy Commission, past President of Whitley County Council, Whitley County Democratic Chairman.  His was a past president of Jaycees and Whitley County Historical Society and former Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce.
His memberships included the Columbia City Church of the Nazarene, Past President of Whitley County Board of Realtors, Whitley County Red Cross and the Columbia City Rotary Club.  He was the treasurer for Whitley County Association of Mentally Disable Children.  
On June 24, 1966, he was united in marriage to Marilyn Hoover.  She survives along with twin daughters, Lindy (James) Moule of New Hampshire and Cindy (Paul) Doolittle of Columbia City, daughter, Sheila (Donald) Jetmore, Columbia City and son, Richard Porter, Columbia City; grandchildren, Ryan (Cara) Hively, Indianapolis, Brant Hively, Scottsdale, AZ, Stacie (Jeffery) Farber, Columbia City, Katie (William) Banford of Illinois; 5 step-grandchildren; great grandchildren, Grahm and Gavin Hively, Sydni and Jacob Farber and Andrew Jetmore Schoettner; brother, Thomas (Cathy) Auer, Columbia City, Jerry (Cindy) Auer, Larwill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Andrew Price Jetmore.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Columbia City Church of the Nazarene.  The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Glenn Paul Frank, 86

Glenn Paul Frank, 86, of Columbia City, died at 6:55 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2010 at The Oaks where he had been a resident for the past four years.
He was born June 29, 1924 in Portland, Indiana a son of Herman R. and Amelia Marie (Fox) Frank. In 1929, the family moved to Columbia City and established the H.R. Frank and Sons Greenhouse.  Glenn attended Columbia City School and graduated from Columbia City High School in 1942.
After his graduation, he worked with the Civilian Public Service and spent time in the Rocky Mountains doing geological surveys.  Upon his return, he attended Manchester College and Purdue University before joining the family’s greenhouse business.
On June 24, 1951, he was united in marriage to Eloise B. Blackwood.  The made their home in Columbia City, later moving to Wolf Road.  Mrs. Frank died October 19, 2006.
Co-Owner and Operator of H.R. Frank and Sons Greenhouse, he also was a local weather forecaster for WFDT radio, a Whitley County Commissioner and served on the Whitley County Council.  From 1986 to 1995, he was the Executive Director of the Columbia City Chamber of Commerce.
A founding member of Columbia City Church of the Brethren, he also served as a Deacon.  He was a past member of the Columbia City Rotary Club.
He is survived by four children, Mary “Marisa” Frank, Fort Wayne, David (Jennifer) Frank, Martha (James) Kreider and Samuel (Ann) Frank, all of Columbia City; nine grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Ardeth Frank.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by 5 brothers, Wilson, Marcus, Hugh, Marion and Dale Frank and three sisters, Evelyn Frank, Alice Frank and Amy McKinney.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Nolt Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lecinda Marie Kiesling, 72

Lecinda Marie Kiesling, 72, of rural Columbia City, died at 2:15 p.m. Friday, November 12, 2010 at her home.
She was born July 19, 1938 in Wolf Lake a daughter of Prentiss and Dortha (Daisy) Miller. Her formative years were spent in Wolf Lake. She graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
On June 1, 1957 she was united in marriage to Robert L. “Tony” Kiesling. They made their first home in Tampa, FL, residing throughout the United States while Tony served in the United States Air Force. In 1974 they moved to Fort Wayne and in 1991 to their home in rural Columbia City. Mr. Kiesling died May 11, 2007.
A devoted Christian, she taught pre-school at the Big Lake Church of God for approximately six years and was an active member of the Wolf Lake Baptist Church. In addition to her love of children, she loved animals providing care and sanctuary.
She is survived by two daughters, Tracey (Gary Bohrer) Carteaux of Fort Wayne and Amanda (Wesley) Woods of Saline, Michigan; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Kiesling; two sisters, Lenora Leitch and Monna Parks; and a brother, Frank Miller.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday 11:00 a.m. at Wolf Lake Baptist Church, 1133 South Main Street, Wolf Lake with Rev. Daniel Carlson, church pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Wolf Lake Cemetery. The visitation will be Monday 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Thorson Allen Howe, 95

Thorson Allen Howe, 95, a resident of Round Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 in the Miller's Merry Manor, Columbia City.
He graduated from the Geneva High School and International Business College, served in the U.S. Army Infantry during WWII, receiving a Purple Heart for wounds incurred at the Battle of the Bulge.
He was the manager of the Geneva Lumber Company, retiring in 1976; past board member of Geneva First United Methodist Church; 50 year member and past Master of Decatur Masonic Lodge #571; member of the Lions Club; Chamber of Commerce; I.O.O.F. Lodge and the Scottish Rite.
He is mourned by his wife of 25 years, Raydeen; son, Frank (Barb) Howe, Berne; daughter, Sharon Thomas, Bluffton; granddaughter, Laura (Ronny) Jacobson, McKees Rocks, PA; great-grandchildren, Jericho and Janelle Jacobson; stepchildren, Terry (Susan) Miller, Columbia City, Peggy Kunkle, Bradenton, FL; step-grandchildren Jackie Miller and Adrian (Casey) Miller; step great grandchildren, Adin and Callahan Miller.
He was preceded in death by his, first wife, Margarete, parents, George and Bessie Holcomb Howe and a brother, Carl.
There will be no visitation. A family service will be held Monday in the Woodland Cemetery in Wolcottville, IN.

Patricia Ann Slagal, 68

Patricia Ann Slagal, 68, of Columbia City, died Monday, November 8, 2010 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne where she was admitted on Saturday.
She was born December 2, 1941 in Fort Wayne a daughter of Lorane H. and Ruth Frances (Harroff) Carter. Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne. She graduated from Central High School with the class of 1960.
On August 15, 1964 she was united in marriage to Gary Lee Slagal. They made their home in Fort Wayne, later moving to Tri-Lakes to pursue her passion of breeding and raising miniature dachshunds.
She established a professional kennel where she bred and raised over 50 miniature and 4 standard Champions. She excelled in Dachshunds category of mini wires. A board member of the American Kennel Club, she was also the Director of the National Miniature Dachshunds Club. For over twenty years she served as the Chair of NMDC Ways and Means Committee. Recognize as a top breeder, she had over 150 Best of Variety Wins. As a professional handler, she finished over 100 miniature dachshund champions. She devoted most of her life to the betterment of the breed.
She is survived by two daughters, Jodi ( Joseph) Schaefer of Columbia City and Jami Davis of North Manchester; four grandchildren, Jennifer Schaefer, Aleisha Davis, Anna Davis and James Davis; one sister, Betty Thompson of Fort Wayne.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Mary Louise Osborn.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. David Overmyer officiating. Interment will be in St. Matthews Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joan L. Johnson, 74

Joan L. Johnson, 74, formerly of Columbia City, died Sunday, November 7, 2010 at Martin Memorial Hospital North in Stuart, Florida.
She was born April 13, 1936 in Peru, Indiana a daughter of Dalbert D. and Pauline L. (Bruner) Gibson. In 1947 her family moved to a farm near South Whitley from Fort Wayne. She graduated from Washington Center High School.
On December 18, 1954 she was united in marriage to Wayne W. Johnson. They made their first home in Carmel, moving throughout Indiana including Whitley County for many years and later Alexandria VA and Deltaville VA before returning to Whitley County in the Fall of 1998. They began wintering in Stuart in 2004, making Stuart their year round home in August 2010.
She was employed at Blue Bell for many years and Columbia Township School as secretary.
Her church membership was with United Methodist Church, currently in Stuart and formerly in Columbia City.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Wayne; two daughters, Cynthia Jo (Mark) Ryan of Fort Wayne and Elaine M. (John) Berens of Glenview IL; six grandchildren, Caitlin & Patrick Ryan and Michael, Michele, Annie & Scott Berens; her mother, Pauline Gibson of Columbia City; and a brother, Kenneth E. Gibson of Indianapolis.
She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Lewis Gibson.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Columbia City United Methodist Church, 605 North Forest Parkway with visitation from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Roy G. "Sam" McCoy, 96

Roy G. "Sam" McCoy, 96, of Jefferson Township, Whitley County, died at 4:10 a.m. Thursday, November 4, 2010 at Renaissance Village where he had been a resident since September.
He was born October 7, 1914 in Washington Township, Whitley County a son of Orin Hubert and Edna Mae (Schinbeckler) McCoy. In 1926 his family moved to Jefferson Township. He graduated from Jefferson Center High School in 1933.
On June 28, 1941 he was united in marriage to Deloris M. Byroade. They made their home in Fort Wayne for six months before returning to the family farm in Jefferson Township. Mrs. McCoy died November 27, 2008.
A lifelong farmer, he worked for Nickle Plate Railroad, drove school bus for 19 years including seven years in Aboite Township with the remainder for Jefferson Center School. He retired in 1986 from Byroade Bros. Siding & Awning with 32 years of service.
His memberships included I.O.O.F. for past 62 years (serving as Past Grand and Past District Deputy), Canton Division & Encampment Division of Fort Wayne I.O.O.F., Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department for 58 years, Ageless Iron Tractor Club and attended Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church.
Surviving relatives include a son, Allen H. (Annette) McCoy of Columbia City; two daughters, Sharon (Dan) Kraft of Fort Wayne and Patricia (Randy Brower) Minnick of Columbia City; a daughter-in-law, Marcia McCoy of Columbia City; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Edward L. McCoy; two infant grandchildren; a brother, Robert L. McCoy; and three sisters, Clela M. Esterline, Mary Watson and Jeanette Shultz.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Jefferson Chapel Cemetery.
The visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with an Odd Fellow Service following the visitation followed by the Indiana Volunteer Firefighter Service.

Suzanne Jeanne Shock, 65

Suzanne Jeanne Shock, 65, of North Webster, IN passed away at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN.  
Born on October 2, 1945 in Muncie, she was the daughter of Dallas Floyd and Marguerite J. "Peggy" (Sweeney) Buis.
She spent most of her lifetime in North Webster and graduated from North Webster High School with the Class of 1963.  On June 3, 1963 she married Curtis E. Shock at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Pierceton. Her first job was manager of Palace of Sweets; then due to her love for books and reading she became librarian at North Webster Jr. High School; then she served as office manager of Blue Flame and lastly she was the owner and operator of the Book Fool Bookstore in North Webster.  She was a member of North Webster United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women's Rebekah Circle and was very instrumental in establishing the North Webster/Tippecanoe Township Library where she served and volunteered on the Library Board of Directors for many years.  She was an avid reader and loved to garden, but her pride and joy were her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Curtis E. Shock of North Webster; son, Michael P. (Kelly) Shock of North Webster; 4 grandchildren, Adam (Christine) Shock, Danielle Walters, Alexander Shock and Anna Shock; sisters, Alice E. "Betsy" (Ralph) Luce and Jane A. (Dexter) Shepherd both of North Webster and D. Kimberly (Philip) Smith of Leesburg; 2 nieces, 5 nephews and several great nieces and nephews.  
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Kellyn "Kelly" Maureen Buis and one nephew, Patrick A. Wiseman.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 5, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. at North Webster United Methodist Church, 7722 E Epworth Forest Road, North Webster.  Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the church with Pastor Wes Brookshire officiating. Lois N. Mote, 89, of Columbia City, IN passed away Sunday, October 31, 2010 at 8:53 p.m. at The Oaks, Columbia City.  
Born April 16, 1921 in Laud, Jefferson Township, IN she was the daughter of Otto and Dessie (Roberts) Ward.                
Raised in Laud, she graduated from Jefferson Center High School with the Class of 1938.  On February 24, 1940 she was united in marriage to Donald L. Mote in Laud.  Former residents of Huntington and Indianapolis, Lois and Donald purchased the general store in Dunfee.  After selling the grocery store, Don and Lois moved to St.Joe, IL where they lived until 1971 when they moved to Fort Wayne.  After the death of her husband, Lois moved to Columbia City to be near her daughter, Vicki and family.  She formerly worked for the Coil Factory in Roanoke; Paterson-Fletcher Clothing Store, Fort Wayne; assisted her husband in the grocery business in Dunfee; and for Dennis Research in Fort Wayne.  In her spare time, she enjoyed playing euchre and watching IU Basketball until she became a resident of The Oaks in 2004.
Survivors include her 2 daughters, Vicki Lynn (Dane) Hosler of Columbia City and Patricia "Pat" (Arlan) Gilmeister of Hastings, MN; 5 grandchildren, Jodi (Jim) Auge of St. Mary's, GA, Jill Roy of Cottage Grove, MN, Denise (Tim) Hearld of Larwill, IN, Scott (Amy) Stansbery of Columbia City, and Ashlee Hosler of Fishers, IN;  and 10 great-grandchildren.  
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald  L. Mote in 1987, sisters, Peggy Binkley and Elma Simcoe, infant sister, Hazel Ward, brothers, Glen and Ralph Ward, and infant brothers, Walter and Ira Ward.

Robert Allen Reed, 69, of Laketon formerly of South Whitley, died at 8:45 a.m. Monday, November 1, 2010 at the Peabody Home, North Manchester where he had been a resident for the past seven weeks.
He was born July 30, 1941 in South Whitley a son of Donel Frederick and Annabella (Hartsough) Reed. His formative years were spent in South Whitley where he attended elementary school and then graduated from South Whitley High School.
On October 21, 1964 he entered the U.S. Marine Corp. He served in Vietnam. On October, 21, 1967, he received his Honorable Discharge.
Self-employed for most of his work career, he owned and operated R & R Service of South Whitley and Sidney primarily providing welding services.
An avid Harley Davidson owner and rider, he was a member of HOG (Harley Owners Group), the Patriot Guard Riders, VFW Post 2919, South Whitley and DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Debra K. (Kris) Hand, North Manchester; two sons, David S. (Beth) Reed, North Manchester, and Brent F. (Stacy) Reed, Claypool; nine grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and his mother, Frances Kimble of San Antonio, Texas.
He was preceded in death by a brother Jerry (Reed) Robinette.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Sidney Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.

Deborah J. "Debbie" Verberkmoes, 48, of Columbia City, died at 3:18 p.m. Sunday, October 31, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital Rehab, Fort Wayne where she was transferred on October 21st from Parkview Hospital, where she was admitted on September 17th.
She was born February 17, 1962 in Fort Wayne, Indiana a daughter of Ralph B. and Marian J. (Chandler) Weller. Her formative years were spent in the New Haven area. She graduated from Heritage High School and International Business College.
On June 14, 1985 she was united in marriage to Randall C. Verberkmoes. They have always made their home in the Columbia City area.
She was employed at North American Van Lines 17 years and most recently Feuser Contracting 5 years.
Her memberships included St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church where she was active in the Christ Renews His Parish Group. She was also a parent assistant and treasurer of CCHS Show Choir and a teacher�s assistant at Mary Raber Elementary School.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Randy; a son, Clayton Verberkmoes at home; her parents, Ralph & Marian Weller of Fort Wayne; two brothers, Greg (Tina) Weller of DeWitt, Iowa and Randy (Karen) Weller of Fort Wayne.
The funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, 315 S. Line Street, Columbia City with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. The burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with a Prayer Service at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to the Clayton Verberkmoes Education Fund.

Hulda L. Duncan, 88

Hulda L. Duncan, 88, a resident of rural Churubusco and widow of Earnest A. Duncan, passed away at 4:30 p. m. on Sunday, October 31, 2010, at the Provena Sacred Heart Home in Avilla.  She had been in declining health for the past seven years.
Mrs. Duncan was born on January 29, 1922 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of William and Freida (Linnemeier) Kruse, and spent her formative years on the family farm in Washington Township.
As a young woman she was employed in Fort Wayne at General Electric and at Kelly Box, and was married in Fort Wayne Duncan, Hulda 2_0001on August 10, 1945 to Earnest A. Duncan.   She spent all of her adult life in rural Smith Township, and was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church–Lake Township, its Lutheran Church Women, and the Whitley County Home Extension Club.
Mr. Duncan preceded her in death on January 26, 2000.
The surviving relatives include her children Joyce (Walter, Jr.) Roberson of Longmont, Colorado, and Dale E. (Dee) Duncan and Joan (Randy) Wilson, both of Churubusco.  There are 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother Paul Kruse.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a. m. on Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Church–Lake Township, 7914 W. Cook Road, with Pastor Darrol Heggen, officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Sheets & Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p. m., or at the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in the Eel River Cemetery, south of Churubusco.
The family requests that memorials be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church–Lake Township, or Churubusco Youth For Christ.
