Charles I. Bender, 83

Charles I. Bender, 83 a resident of Columbia City, died at 12 pm noon Tuesday, December 28, 2010 in the Parkview Whitley Hospital.
He was born on June 28, 1927 in Blue Island, Illinois, a son of Lewis Henry and Edna Bell Hayes Bender. His formative years were spent in Blue Island and after completing his education in the local high school, he enlisted in 1945 in the U.S. Merchant Marines, serving during World War II.
Following his discharge from the Merchant Marines, he started his employment with the United Telephone Company as a lineman, later a test board frameman and retired in December 1986 from the Warsaw warehouse and supply department.
On May 31, 1958, he was united in marriage to Wilma M. Day in the Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. G. L. Kleespie. The have spent their married life in Whitley County.
He was a member of the Larwill Due Guard Masonic Lodge #278, a Past Master of the lodge and of the Pierceton American Legion Post.
The surviving relatives include his wife, Wilma; five children, Daryl A. Bender, Fort Wayne, Charla B. (Patrick) Higgins, Fort Wayne, Julia A. (Rick) Quiring, Decatur, Texas, Kathryn R. (Brian) Paseka, Columbia City and Charles L. (Anita) Bender, Larwill; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren and a sister Barbara A. Juillerat, Elk River, MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lewis; grand daughter, Brandi A. Bender; four great grandchildren Nicholas Adkins, Peyton Bender, Justice Bender Wheaton and Traeman Bender.
In keeping with the wishes of Mr. Bender there will be no service or visitation.
