Frank C. Mercer, 86
Frank C. Mercer, 86, of Columbia City, died at 10:44 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at his home.
He was born November 28, 1924 in Portsmouth, Ohio a son of Howard R. and Eunice (Hiller) Mercer. He was educated in Portsmouth and completed his education in criminology in New London, Ohio.
On April 5, 1943 he was inducted in the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged November 10, 1945.
From 1950 until 1959 he served as a detective for the Portsmouth Police Department. In 1959 he moved to Phoenix, Arizona and began his employment in security for Motorola until his retirement in 1985.
On April 10, 1969 he was united in marriage to Janis Marlene Rosenogle. They made their home in Phoenix, Arizona until 1989 when they returned to Portsmouth, Ohio. In 2006 they moved to their home in Columbia City.
He was a life member of the Miniature Pinscher Club of America.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Janis; four children, Sharon Curas of Mississippi, Theresa Todd of Ohio, Priscilla Hacker of Ohio and Frank Mercer Jr. of Arizona; two step daughters, Donna (Kenneth) Hyser of Columbia City and Cheryl Sue (Hogan) Smith of Fort Wayne; a special friend, Scott Bunnell of Arizona; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and his canine companion, Jazzi.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roland and Gene.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011 at Smith & Sons Coach Room with the family receiving friends after 10 a.m.
Preferred memorials are to Humane Society of Whitley County or Parkview Home Health & Hospice.
