Schuyler P. VanVoorst, 90
Schuyler P. VanVoorst, 90, of Columbia City, died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 29th at Miller’s Merry Manor where he had been a resident for the past three weeks. 
He was born September 30, 1921 in Etna Troy Township, Whitley County, a son of Dale George and Irene Erma (Haney) VanVoorst. His formative years were spent on a farm in Etna Troy Township. Following his graduation from Larwill High School in 1939, he began farming with his father.
On June 9, 1945 he was united in marriage to Avis I. Blanchard. They made their first home on a farm in Thorncreek Township. Ten years later they moved to their farm in Etna Troy Township. Mrs. VanVoorst, his wife of 54 years, preceded him in death July 31, 1999.
A lifelong dairyman and grain farmer, he also drove school bus for Etna Troy Township for 20 years.
He was a member of Columbia City United Methodist Church and attended Etna United Methodist Church men’s group. He served one term as Whitley County Commissioner and seven years as Whitley County Councilman. He helped start the first Whitley County Soil & Water district and was a member of Farm Bureau. A supporter and firm believer of 4-H, he was a 10 year member and 4-H leader for several years.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Dr. Steven J. (Debra) VanVoorst of South Pittsburg, TN, and John D. (Karen) VanVoorst of Etna Troy Township; three grandchildren, Joshua VanVoorst, Jacob VanVoorst and Danyelle Stine; and three great grandsons, Michael, Cameron and Ashton.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Arlene Widman.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Columbia City United Methodist Church Building Fund or Whitley County 4-H Dairy Club.
