Dorothy Harl, 95

Dorothy Harl, 95, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 10:10 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.
Born February 20, 1916 in Owensboro, KY, she was the daughter of George and Hattie (Burdette) Papon.
She attended school in Kentucky. On October 8, 1936, she married William Irvin Harl in Owensboro, KY. She lived in Fort Wayne until moving to Loon Lake in 1949. She and her husband remained at Loon Lake until they moved to the Westgate Addition, Columbia City. For many years, she and her husband were owners of the Loon Lake Resort. 
Survivors include her daughter, Donna K. Harl of Columbia City.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, William Irvin Harl, 2 brothers and 1 sister.
To honor Mrs. Harl's wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Luise Barbara Germann Pook, 95

Luise Barbara Germann Pook, 95, passed away peacefully Friday night, January 27th, 2012 at home. She was born on February 11, 1916, in Cleveland, OH, a daughter of the late Dr. Albert F. O. Germann, Sr. and Ida Helene (Meinke) Germann.
A graduate of Cleveland East High School in 1933, she attended Flora Stone Mather College of Western Reserve University from 1933-36. After moving to South Whitley and helping start her father’s business, she completed her Bachelors degree at Manchester College in 1940.
She retired in 1977 from her teaching career, which was interrupted to raise her family. She also always supported in any way possible and was part owner of her family’s business founded by her father, Nutritional Research Associates, Inc., since it’s founding in 1934.
On June 4, 1944, she was united in marriage with Clarence Henry Louis Pook. To this marriage were born three daughters and one son: Mavelen (Thomas) Woodruff of South Whitley; Luana (Stephen) Carlson of DeWitt, MI; Alida (Joseph) Winkler of Greensburg, IN; and Jonathan Germann Pook of South Whitley.
Also surviving are one brother, Dr. Albert F. O. (Jean) Germann II; grandchildren Stephanie (Phil) Kowatch, Andrea (Joe) Meiser, Matthew Carlson, Elizabeth Woodruff, and Andrew (Rachel) Woodruff; five great-grandchildren, brother-in-law D. Ross Osborn, sister-in-law Velma (Pook) Hofmann, seven nieces and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence on April 13, 1996, her parents, her two sisters Edith Osborn and Lucia Harley, and one nephew.
Barbara was called to her heavenly home just 2 weeks shy of her 96th birthday. A Christian funeral will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 3rd in the historical St. John Chapel at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2465 W. Keiser Road in Whitley County. Burial will be at the St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. on Thursday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley, and 10 to 11 A.M. Friday prior to the Service at St. John Chapel.

Olga Wilson, 81

Olga Wilson, 81, of Columbia City, died at 10:24 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2012 at Parkview Oaks where she had been a resident since November 12, 2011.
She was born August 28, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois a daughter of Bert and Albertina (Anderson) Fahlstrom. Her formative years were spent in Chicago.
On July 15, 1950 she was united in marriage to Lester F. "Red" Wilson in Chicago, Illinois. They moved to Columbia City in 1960. Red preceded Olga in death on April 26, 2006.
She enjoyed bowling and golf, participating in several leagues.
Surviving relatives include a son, Terry J. Wilson of Columbia City; two grandsons and a daughter-in-law, Joseph Wilson II, Jeremy Wilson and Ruthann Bateman, all of Hamburg, New York.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Wilson; three brothers, Albert Fahlstrom, Arthur Fahlstrom and Robert Fahlstrom.
Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Burial will be at a later date at Greenhill Cemetery.

Delores Coyle Mathews, 83

Delores Coyle Mathews, 83, of Columbia City, died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2012 at her home.  She had been in failing health.
She was born November 7, 1928 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin a daughter of the late John and Josie (Ellington) Main. Her formative years were spent in Wisconsin.  She moved to Indiana at the age of 22 locating in Syracuse and then North Webster before moving to Columbia City in 1959.
She was employed in the laundry services of Whitley County Memorial Hospital for four years and then Bondflex Rubber for 24 years as an inspector.  She retired in May of 1989.
On November 4, 1978, she was united in marriage to Jay Mathews.  He died February 27, 2002.
Her memberships included Grace Lutheran Church.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Bruce (Lynn) Coyle and Daniel (Judy) Coyle both of Columbia City; a step-son, Brian (Yo) Mathews, Albion, Michigan; two step daughters, Mary (William) Adkins, Columbia City and Lori Fox, Pembrook Pines, Florida; grandchildren, Derek (Vickie) Coyle, Jennifer (Kyle) Stevenson, Jared Coyle, Jennifer Reffitt, James Adkins, Teresa (Brian Merta) Adkins, Crystal (Kevin) Yaw, Jonathan Mathews and Jessica Fox, and ten great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Coyle and a grandson, Nicholas Ryan Adkins.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, 204 North Main Street, Columbia City.  The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City and one hour prior to the service at the church

Carol R. Gambrell, 75


Carol R. Gambrell,  75, a resident of Columbia Township, died peacefully at 3:15 pm Saturday, January 28, 2012 at her home following a long battle with cancer.
She was born on October 18, 1936 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Sherman and Martha Mercerschmidt Noll.  Her formative years were spent in Fort Wayne, where her family owned a grocery store.  She graduated from North Side High School and received her nursing degree from the Parkview School of Nursing in 1958.  She was first employed by Dr. Schrader in Warsaw, then at the Whitley County Memorial Hospital and for many years worked in the office of Dr. Randall Carpenter in Columbia City retiring in January 2002.  She had also worked for the Whitley County E.M.S. for four years.
On September 15, 1972, she was united in marriage to James A. Gambrell and they have resided on the same farm since 1973.
She was a member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Hannah Group, Parkview Nurses Alumni Association and she had a great passion for playing bridge.
The surviving relatives include her husband, Jim; sons Timothy (Cheryl) Anglin, Trenton (Pam) Anglin and Timothy (Susie) Gambrell all of Columbia City; a daughter, Jennifer (Jamie) Hankins, Paris, KY; ten grand children and 4 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Kelly Clark.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday in the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Joyce Gerwing, officiating.  The visitation will be from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm Tuesday at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City and one hour before the service at the church.

Mary A. Kitson, 96

Mary A. Kitson, 96, of Columbia City, died at 7:50 a.m. Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the home of her daughter.
She was born July 2, 1915 in Whitley County, Indiana a daughter of the late Orson Andrew and Mary Elizabeth (Roberts) Carmin. She graduated from Larwill High School in 1934.
Following her graduation, she worked at the former Blue Bell, Columbia City.
On February 12, 1938 she was united in marriage to Eugene Kitson. Mr. Kitson died January 21, 1985.
They were the owners of Columbia Dairy until 1971 after which they started a vegetable and fruit farm north of Columbia City. Her church membership was with Troy Presbyterian.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Linda (Phil) Lundblad and Dianna (Marvin) Ewing both of Columbia City; 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and a sister Arlene Wince, Columbia City.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Miller; an infant son; a sister, Ary Gibson; two brothers, Leon and Omer Carmin, and a grandson, Tad Ewing.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Howard Compton of Troy Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mary Louise Zuber, 74

Mary Louise Zuber, 74, Columbia City, IN passed away at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2011 at her residence. She was born on July 17, 1937 in Fort Wayne, the daughter of Alexander and Dorothy (Kohel) Fox.
She attended school through the 8th grade.  She married Wayne A. Zuber on October 16, 1954 in Fort Wayne. She was a homemaker and lived in Fort Wayne until 1990 moving to their lake home in Wolcottville for 17 years and has lived in Columbia City the past 4 years. She was an artist who enjoyed ceramics, creating porcelain dolls, cross-stitching, beading and also she enjoyed playing dominos and cards. She was very active at the Woodland's Senior Center and was a member of the Old Bats and Red Hats, both in Columbia City and the Silver Striders and Domino Girls in Wolcottville.
She is survived by 3 children including, Lola (Phil Richards) Bendele, Sarasota, FL, James (Rita) Zuber, Fort Wayne and Julie (Joseph) Gruss, Columbia City; 5 grandchildren, John Bendele, Adam Zuber, Tim Zuber, Jessica Burkett and Marie Neer and 6 great grandchildren, Jacob Bendele, Milo Burkett, Felix Burkett, Alexa Zuber, Ann Neer and Jade Neer; 3 sisters, Janet (Harold) George, Martha Rose "Marty" Roberts and Nancy (Robert) Howey all of Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne A. Zuber, brother, Ronald Fox and sister, Barbara Ann Campos.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 29, 2012 from 1-3:00 p.m. with funeral service immediately following at 3:00 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Mary E. Grant, 90, of Columbia City, IN passed away peacefully with her loving family near her on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City. Born April 23, 1921 in Columbia City,she was the daughter of Joseph and Bertha Ann (Bush) Sheets.
She was raised in Columbia City and has resided in Larwill, Blue Lake, Smith Township and South Whitley and Indianapolis, with son, Barry Graves before returning to Columbia City.  She was educated in the Coesse public schools. She married Arthur L. Grant.  She worked for 9 years as a welder at Ion Capicitor; as a beautician at the LaCharm Beauty Shop; and as a steamstress at Blue Bell for 10 years.
Survivors include her sons, Barry A. Graves of Indianapolis and Murray (Candy) Graves of Claypool; step-daughter, Lucratia Ruckman of South Whitley; 3 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 6 step-grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Arthur L. Grant, sisters, Hattie Bridigan, Louella Richey, Hazel Treech, Effa Watson, Rose Hartman, brothers, John Wesley and William Buck Sheets and daughter, Cynthia Lee.

Stanley E. Buckles, 97

Stanley E. Buckles, 97, of rural Kimmell, died at 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Parkview Whitley Hospital where he had been admitted on Wednesday.
He was born April 11, 1914 in Allen County, IN the only child of the late, Carlos E. and Cecelia (Lawrence) Buckles. His formative years were spent in Washington Twp, Noble County. He graduated from Wolf Lake High School.
On December 25, 1940, he was united in marriage to Grace A. Coverstone. They made their home on the family farm in Washington Twp, Noble County. Mrs. Buckles died June 20, 1999.
A life-long farmer, he was also trained by the REMC as an electrician. He was a member of the workforce responsible for the electrification of rural homes and farms in Allen and Noble Counties. He served as Township Trustee for Washington Twp, Noble County. He also served on the Township Advisory Board, Noble County Library Board and West Noble School Board. He was a member of Ormas Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school, and a member of the Indiana Farm Bureau.
Surviving relatives include his children, Alice (Michael) Roberts, Kimmell, Walter (Starr) Buckles, Elkhart, Carlos (Carol) Buckles, Columbia City, Samuel (Ruth) Buckles, Cromwell, Esther Hartman, Columbia City, Wanda Pelton, Lafayette, and Anna (Larry) O’Cull, Westfield, IN; 22 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Arthur Pelton.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Walt Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Stringtown Cemetery. The visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Galen R. "Johnnie" Johnson, 82, of Columbia City, died at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.
He was born September 28, 1929 in Huntington County, Indiana a son of the late Andrew and Cornelia (Bauer) Johnson. His formative years were spent in Washington Township, Whitley County. He graduated from Washington Center High School in 1947.
He began his work career with Salisbury (Dana) Axle, Fort Wayne for ten years and then began work with Columbia Dairy as a local dairy delivery man for ten years. He then joined Production Credit, More Farm Store and over ten years with Martin Transportation as a charter bus driver. Coinciding with his day jobs, he worked for over 50 years as an auction clerk for Schrader Real Estate and Auction Company.
On September 29, 1990 he was united in marriage to Patricia J. Foster Roberts. They made their home in Columbia City.
For many years he was the official timekeeper for Columbia City Eagles Basketball. His memberships included, Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church and Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1906.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Pamela (Lynn) Lehman, Fishers, IN and Ronda (Steve) Hurst, Carmel, IN; two step children, Nathan J.R. (Sue) Roberts, Columbia City and Darcy (Brian) Hyndman, Columbia City; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stanley A. Johnson and a sister Gwendolyn Clark.
The funeral service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 204 N Main St, Columbia City. Burial will be in the Greenhill Cemetery. Lois J. Preston, 89

Lois J. Preston, 89, of Columbia City, died at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Parkview Oaks where she was admitted on October 19th.
She was born August 30, 1922 in Whitley County, Indiana a daughter of William Thomas and Ione J. (Tucker) Perry. As a second grader, her family moved to a farm in Dekalb County from the Coesse area. She graduated from Butler High School.
On August 31, 1940 she was united in marriage to Arthur Thomas Preston. They made their home in Fort Wayne until September 1947 when they moved to their home in Columbia City. Mr. Preston died September 12, 1993.
She was employed at Magnavox for four years and Whitley Products for four years. In 1964 she began working in the Columbia Township Assessor office then Whitley County Assessor office and later Whitley County Recorder office. In January 1980 she began working as a realtor for Century 21, six years later transferring her license to Grable & Associates.
Her memberships include Grace Lutheran Church since June 1948, Eagles #1906 Auxiliary, American Legion Post #98 Auxiliary and Indiana Realtors Association.
Surviving relatives include two children, Larry L. Preston of Auburndale, Florida and Nancy D. Wait of Columbia City; five grandchildren, John Preston, Dan Preston, Alyssa Wait Fajardo, Justin Wait and Megan Wait; three great grandchildren; and three sisters, Phyllis Wood of Columbia City, Garnet Retter of Tri Lakes and Evelyn Fahl of Warsaw.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Louise Perry and Junelle Luther.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 204 North Main Street, Columbia City with visitation after 1 p.m. The burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. The visitation will also be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Clinton Brown, Jr., 69

Clinton Brown, Jr., 69, of Columbia City, died at 2:55 p.m. Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne.
He was born January 8, 1943 in Memphis, TN a son of the late Clinton and Melissa (Laird) Brown.
He began his work career in the construction trade and later became a machinist for Hoof Products in Chicago. In 1990, he moved to Winona Lake and was employed by Walmart, Warsaw until retiring in 1997 following a heart attack.
In 2007 he moved to Arizona. After a few years, he returned to the area, most recently living in Columbia City.
Surviving relatives include two sons, John (Christina) Brown, Columbia City and Clinton Brown III, Phoenix, AZ; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Almeda (Frank) Tasker, Chicago, IL and Mildred Shegog, Memphis, TN and a brother, Donald Brown of Memphis, TN.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eddie Williams and Arlene Brown, and three brothers, Ronald Brown, Morris Brown, and George Brown.
At the request of the family, there will be no visitation or funeral.

Carla Anne Cooper, 57

Carla Anne Cooper, 57, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 8:25 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana, Fort Wayne. On March 20, 1954, in Fort Knox, KY, she was the oldest of three daughters born to Maynard E. and Beverly J. (Pence) Harrold.
As a child, she resided in Columbia City where she graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the Class of 1972. She graduated in 1976 from Indiana University with a Bachelor Degree in Psychology and French with distinction.  Carla earned a Masters Degree in Education in 1994 from Valparaiso University. On October 11, 1980, she married Stewart Cooper at First Church of God, Columbia City. After her marriage, she resided in Missouri for almost five years and Valparaiso, IN, until 2004, when she returned to Columbia City. From 1990 - 2004, she was employed by Northwest Indiana Special Education Cooperative, Crown Point, where she worked as a School Psychologist for Merrillville Schools, completed a school psychology internship for Hobart Schools and taught for Highland Schools. In 1989, she taught sixth grade at Westville Elementary School. A member of First Church of God, she also worked part-time at the church as a Ministry Assistant and attended the Sojourners small group and Tea Time Bible study. An avid reader, she enjoyed teaching her nephews and nieces piano lessons and watching Indiana University basketball and football games.  Using her passion for those in need, she volunteered at the non-food and clothing church pantry.
Survivors include her son, Christopher (Katie) Cooper of Valparaiso; mother, Beverly J. Harrold; sisters, Aimee (Loren) Fry and Jean (David) Kessie all of Columbia City; nieces and nephews; and good friend, Michael Gillman of Fort Wayne. Her father preceded her in death on August 22, 2000.
Visitation is Wednesday, January 25, 2012 from 2 - 7 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Funeral service is Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. with calling after 10 a.m. Pastor James Martin and Pastor Penny Mosher will officiate. Lowell B. Bodine, 84

Lowell B. Bodine, 84, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 5:58 a.m. Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City. 
Born August 17, 1927 in Maybee, MI, he was the son of Benjamin C. and Lucille (Yost) Bodine.
He graduated from Dundee High School, Dundee, MI with the Class of 1946.  A Whitley County resident since 2009, he was a former resident of Lake James and Michigan.  On June 12, 1948, he married Phyllis A. Wiseman in Maybee, MI.  After 33 years of service, he retired December, 1987, from National Life Insurance.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Phyllis A. Bodine of Columbia City; daughter, Barbara A. (Steve) Gross of Columbia City; son, David L. Bodine of Grayling, MI; 2 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Lennon and Harry Bodine.
Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City.  Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2012 at the funeral home with Pastor Barry Faucett officiating. Robert Eugene Workman, 83

Robert Eugene Workman, 83, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Miller's Merry Manor Inc., Columbia City.  Born May 11, 1928 in Logansport, IN, he was the son of Grover Cleveland and Pearl Mae (Michael) Workman.
In addition to Kalamazoo, MI, he lived in several Indiana cities including, Kentland, Churubusco, Auburn, Rome City, Kendallville, and Columbia City.  He graduated from Kentland High School with the Class of 1946.  On May 11, 1958, he married Margaret Louise Craig in Whitley County.  He worked at Pennsylvania Railroad as a Clerk.  He was a member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret "Mickey" Louise Workman of Columbia City; 12 nephews and nieces including Charles S. (Becki) Mathieu of Churubusco, Jodi (Dean) Stangland of Columbia City and Julie LaCount of Goshen; sister-in-law, Sarah Ann Blackshire of Goshen.  His parents preceded him in death.

Beatrice Roseann "Rosie" Winger, 83, formerly of North Manchester, died at 12:35 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Miller's Merry Manor, Columbia City, where she had been a resident since December 16, 2011.
She was born April 7, 1928 in North Manchester, Indiana a daughter of Riley and Ina (Rhinehart) Lambert. Her formative years were spent in North Manchester and she graduated from Central High School.
On August 1, 1947 she was united in marriage to Arden Joe Winger. They made their home in Fort Wayne and later North Manchester before moving to South Whitley in 1959. In 1988 they began spending their summers at Big Cedar Lake north of Columbia City and their winters in Sebring, Florida. Following Joe's death on January 30, 1989, Rosie moved to Fort Wayne for 10 years before returning to North Manchester in 1999.
A homemaker, she worked at Tranter Printing in South Whitley for over 10 years.
Surviving relatives include three sons, Michael (Debbie) Winger of Columbia City, Matthew (Debbie) Winger of South Whitley and Mitchel (Beckie) Winger of South Whitley; six grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and two sisters, Beverly Schnepp of North Manchester and Lorella Greathouse of Wabash.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard Lambert, Riley Eugene Lambert and Max Lambert.
A private family graveside service will be held at Eel River Ulrey Cemetery near Silver Lake. The visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Nellie R. Boyer, 95

Nellie R. Boyer, 95, of Little Cedar Lake, died at 4:30 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2012 at her home.
She was born July 26, 1916 in Huntington County, Indiana a daughter of Frank and Grace (Plasterer) Pasko. Her formative years were spent in Union Township, Huntington County. She graduated from Union Township High School.
On November 9, 1935 she was united in marriage to Roger B. Boyer. They made their home on the Eckman Farm in Rock Creek Township, Huntington County until 1945 when they moved to a farm in Lancaster Township. In 1981 they retired from farming and moved to their home on Little Cedar Lake, north of Columbia City. Mr. Boyer died June 4, 1997.
She was a member of Columbia City Church of the Nazarene.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Jack (Marquita) Boyer of Urbana, OH and Rex (Glenda) Boyer of Huntington; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joanne Boyer; a sister, Dorothy Belle Halsey; and two brothers, Alfred Pasko and Chester Frank Pasko.
The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Huntington First Church of the Nazarene, 1555 Flaxmill Road, Huntington with visitation 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday. The burial will be in Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington.
Preferred memorials may be directed to Mercy Hospital Hospice or Parkview Home Health & Hospice.

Marjorie M. Judd, 79

Marjorie M. Judd, 79, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 1:13 p.m. Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City.  Born March 15, 1932 in Noble County, IN, she was the daughter of Chris H. and Dorothy B. (Ringler) Lehman.
She lived in Noble County until the age of nine, moving with her family to Whitley County where she attended Columbia City High School.  On July 16, 1949, she married Dale E. Judd in Columbia City.  A homemaker, she was a member of Oak Grove Church of God, and a past member of Columbia City Baptist Church where she arranged and provided altar flowers weekly for the Sunday worship service.
Survivors include her sons, David W. (Michelle "Mike") and Daniel E. (Cindy) Judd both of Columbia City; brothers, Harold (Mary Lou) Lehman and Kenneth (Elsie) Lehman both of Columbia City; sisters, Dorothy Smith of Columbia City, Mary (Este) Martz of Ocala, FL, Betty Anderson of Columbia City, Linda (Gary) Craig and Ruth Ann Trumbull both of Fort Wayne; granddaughters Teresa Bills, Andrea Sutton and Ericka Lambert; and 4 great-grandsons, Cole and Chase Bills, Trevor Sutton and Andrew Lambert.  In addition to her parents and husband, Dale E. Judd, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Penny D. Judd; brothers, Larry, Charles, Jack and Ralph Lehman; and one great-grandson, Zachary David Lambert.

Daniel Rosas Torres, 85

Daniel Rosas Torres, 85, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 11:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2012 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne. Born on March 20, 1926 in Hondo, TX, he was the son of Frutoso and Maria Rita (Rosas) Torres.
He was raised in Texas and in 1948 moved to Columbia City. His first marriage was to Celia "Sally" Martinez in 1948 in Eagle Pass, TX and his second marriage was to Anna Marie Karolina Pohl on June 7, 1984 in North Carolina.                             
He worked at JI Case Implements, Churubusco in the late 1950's and early 1960's and from 1962-1982 he worked at Weatherhead Company, Columbia City in production and machining.  He was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, Eagles Lodge #1906 and the UAW Local all of Columbia City.  
Survivors include 1 son, Oscar R.(Bonnie) Torres of Columbia City; 3 daughters, Irene (Daniel) Strong, Urbana, OH, Gloria (Keith) Kesling and Elvia (Walt) Barnes both of Columbia City; 5 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Samuel R. Torres of Columbia City; and sister, Nativedad Riojas of Yakama, WA.  He is preceded in death by his parents, both wives and 6 brothers and sisters including, Jose, Jesusita, Frutoso, Candelario,  Maria, and Baudelia Torres.

Richard K. Bishop, 74, of Columbia City, died at 10:22 a.m. Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at The Oaks Living Center where he was admitted on Monday.
He was born September 5, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois a son of William and Helen (Blain) Bishop. His formative years were spent in Chicago.
On July 22, 1962 he was united in marriage to Sondra Kay Simpson. They made their home in Fort Wayne until 2003 when they moved to Columbia City.
He was employed at Hall's Restaurants and lastly J. C. Murphy's before becoming disabled.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Sondra; four children, Mary (Wim) Imson of Forrest VA, Richard Bishop of Fort Wayne, William Bishop of Columbia City and Karen (Garth) Kyler of Larwill; five grandchildren; two sisters, Pat Whitaker of California and Margaret Tuttle of New Haven; and two brothers, John Bishop of Florida and Mike Bishop of Hammond.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Bishop.
The visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Mary E. Leazier, 84

Mary E. Leazier, 84, formerly of Big Lake, died Tuesday morning, January 10, 2012 at Miller's Merry Manor where she had been a resident since June 2008.
She was born July 16, 1927 in Huntington, Indiana a daughter of John L. and Louise K. (Stark) Slusser Sr. In 1944 her family moved to Big Lake from Huntington. She completed her education at Wolf Lake High School.
During World War II, she worked at General Electric. She was also employed at South Whitley Products, Wolf Lake Products and Knapp Lake Products.
On July 29, 1948 she was united in marriage to Charles L. Leazier. They made their home in Fort Wayne for six months before moving to Big Lake. Mr. Leazier died November 5, 1999.
Her church membership was with Grace Lutheran Church.
Surviving relatives include a son, Edwin Charles (Rhonda) Leazier of Wolf Lake; two grandsons, Cody Geiger and Eric Geiger; four great grandsons; and two sisters, Martha Steury of Fort Wayne and Mary Beth McBride of Syracuse.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Toni Lee Leazier; a brother, John Jr. Slusser; three sisters, Lois Jean Johnson, Gloria Yant and Shirley Ann Slusser; and a half brother, Gerald "Bud" Wampler.
The funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date at Thorn Cemetery, Ormas.

Carol "Darlene" Kneller, 83, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at Parkview Oaks Nursing Home, Columbia City.  Born December 14, 1928 in Syracuse, IN, she was the daughter of Chester and Margaret (Poscharscky) Miller.
She graduated from Syracuse High School with the Class of 1947. She has been a resident of Whitley County since her marriage to Jack L. Kneller on February 14, 1948 in Syracuse. She retired from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Columbia City, as a clerk. 
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Jack L. Kneller of Columbia City; son, Rick A. ("Mick" Russo-Kneller) Kneller of Syracuse; daughter, Tamra J. Gordon of Columbia City; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great great grandchildren and 1 sister, Sandra Baumgarner of Milford. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters; Betty Miller and Berneice Knisley; son-in-law Dan Gordon and 1 great great grandchild.

Lana Lynette McCoy, 64, of Columbia City, IN passed away at 3:01 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2012 at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. She was born on January 7, 1947 in Fort Wayne, the daughter of William O. and Wilma J. (Roose) Harris.
Lana has spent her entire lifetime in Whitley County and graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1965. She then received an associate degree from Fort Wayne Beauty College. Her first marriage was to Larry Dean Wolfe in 1965 and her second marriage was to Jesse N. McCoy on March 27, 2000 in Chattanooga, TN.
She first worked as a hairstylist, then Dwyers, South Whitley, Magnavox for 10 years of service, Stumps Printing, South Whitley, Breyden Products, Columbia City, served as a waitress at S and L Truck Stop and currently employed at Ultra Electronics/USSI. Her memberships included Eagles Lodge #1906 Auxiliary and Harley Owner's Group.
Survivors include her husband, Jesse N. McCoy, Columbia City; 3 children, Kathy L. (Richard) Flauding, Larwill, Shirley K. (Ti) Langohr, Columbia City and Douglas E. Wolfe, South Whitley; 1 step daughter, Stacey (Keith) Enyeart, Columbia City; 5 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild and 2 brothers, William Brent (Cindy) Harris, Wolf Lake and Brad E. Harris, Warsaw. She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Larry Dean Wolfe and 2 brothers, Garry and Larry Harris.

Blanche Louise Nichols, 94, of rural Columbia City, died at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at her home.
She was born February 18, 1917 in Thorncreek Township, Whitley County a daughter of Ray Jennings and Alice Berniece (Lott) Hively. Her formative years were spent in Thorncreek Township. She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1935.
On June 28, 1935 she was united in marriage to Paul C. Nichols. They made their home in Thorncreek Township until 1939 when they moved to Lorane. Mr. Nichols died October 18, 1952.
She began working at Weatherhead in June 1947, retiring on April 1, 1979.
Surviving relatives include 12 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; and 31 great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Keith C. Nichols and Doyle D. Nichols.
The graveside service will be held at 12 Noon Friday at Greenhill Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Melinda Anne Jones, 34, of Huntertown, IN passed away at 10:46 p.m Sunday, January 1, 2012 at her home.  Born February 22, 1977, in Columbia City, IN she was the daughter of John and Mildred Earlene (Graves) Bradbury.
She lived in Etna and Columbia City areas most of her lifetime until recently moving to Huntertown.  She graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1995 and attended Rudae Beauty College earning an Associate Degree.  She first worked at Dekko, Knapp Lake, as a factory worker and she currently was employed as a hairstylist at Smart Style located in Wal Mart, Columbia City and Fort Wayne. She enjoyed watching movies, shopping, styling hair and painting nails.
Survivors include her father, John Bradbury of Columbia City; brother, Michel (Tiffany) Jones of Columbia City; 3 children, Hayden Michel Meyer of Columbia City, Olivia Christine West and Xavier Patton West both of Fort Wayne; maternal grandmother, Barbara Sanderson of Fort Wayne; paternal grandmother, Sandra May, Goshen. She was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Earlene Bradbury; daughter, Autumn Dawn Meyer; and great grandmother, Mildred Herron.

Virginia L. Lusk-Baumgartner, 95

Virginia L. Lusk-Baumgartner, 95, formerly of Columbia City and currently of Fort Wayne, passed away at 7:47 a.m. Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Covington Commons, Fort Wayne, IN. Born June 1, 1916 in Fort Wayne, IN she was the daughter of Sylvester and Elsie (Ferguson) Coleman.
She spent her childhood in Fort Wayne and graduated from Elmhurst High School with the Class of 1934. In 1947, she moved to Whitley County, moving to Tri-Lakes in 1965. In 2001, she moved to her present address at Covington Commons in Fort Wayne. In June, 1934, her first marriage was to Thurman T. Lusk.  They were married for 47 years before he passed away in October, 1981.  In May, 1985 her second marriage was to Dale Baumgartner and he passed away in March, 1999.
After 35 years of service, she retired in 1978 as a documentary secretary for the former Magnavox Company, Fort Wayne.  She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary #1906 since 1977; Woman of the Moose Post #1063 Auxiliary since 1970; and the American Legion Auxiliary Post #98 all of Columbia City.  A life member of the Fort Wayne Musician's Union #58, as a Professional Organist, she also was a member of the Magnavox Quarter Century Club.
Survivors include her nieces, Kathy Klinger and Terri Hughes both of Fort Wayne; several other nieces and nephews; great-nephews and nieces and 1 brother in law, Jack Hughes, Fort Wayne. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Thurman T. Lusk, second husband, Dale Baumgartner, sisters, Eloise Hughes and Faith Newburn, brothers, Laurence and James A. Coleman.

Paul Eugene Leiter, 62

Paul Eugene Leiter, 62, of rural Pierceton, died at 6:05 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2012 at his home. He had been in failing health.
He was born April 14, 1949 in Warsaw, IN a son of the late, Cloyce “Dick” and Dorothy (Pernesky) Leiter. His formative years were spent in the Warsaw and Leesburg area. He graduated from Warsaw High School.
On April 1, 1969 he entered the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged March 31, 1971. He returned to the Warsaw area.
He then moved to California for 15 years before returning to the Warsaw area. He completed his work career with over 15 years at Supreme Corp, Goshen.
His memberships include American Legion Post 258 and Legion Riders, Pierceton and ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Towards Education) of Indiana, Region 1.
Surviving relatives include a son, William (Amy) Leiter, California; a brother, Jerry (Beverly) Leiter, Milford; his fiancée, Diane Sroufe and her children, Jennifer (David) Wilder, Columbia City, Janna (Mike) Braden, Larwill and Jody (Shane) Menzie, Larwill; and thirteen grandchildren.
The visitation will be Thursday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. with the funeral at 2:00 p.m. at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. Pastor Ross O’Dell of Trinity Evangelical Presbyterian Church will officiate. The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 258.

Howard S. Strader, 82

Howard S. Strader, 82, of Fort Wayne, IN passed away at 5:58 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne. Born October 13, 1929 in Akron, OH, he was the son of William and Mildred (McPhillen) Strader.
He was a resident of Allen County until moving to Whitley County in 1951.  He attended St. Joe Township Schools, Allen County. He served in the United States Air Force.  On May 5, 1951, he married Carole R. Mansdorfer at Aboite Christian Church.  For 28 years, he worked for American Hoist in Fort Wayne. He also worked for the Whitley County Sheriff's Department for 8 years retiring in 1994.  He formerly attended Dunfee Missionary Church, Dunfee, and was a former member of the American Legion in Fort Wayne.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Carole R. Strader of Fort Wayne; 3 daughters, Connie S. (Ernie) Coy of Leesburg, Rita M. (Rollie) Strahm, Angola and Joyce S. (Greg) Pierce of Fort Wayne; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stanley H. Strader; brothers, Dwight L., William D. and Edward L. Strader, his twin brother; infant sister and 1 granddaughter, Amanda Pierce.
