« September 2010 | Main | November 2010 »
The Columbia City girls' cross-country team is headed to the State meet this Saturday afternoon, for back-to-back seasons.
Senior Renee Menzie (18:54.38) showed the way to state with an 8th place finish at the New Haven semistate. Following her leadership, freshman Samantha Roush (19:05.57) ended in the 12th spot, while 20th place belongs to Columbia City freshman Brooke Werstler (19:20.92). Toping out the top 50 for the Eagles was Carlee Hearld (20:15.01) in 47th.
At the semistate meet, City ended up in 3rd place and will look to improve their 16th place State meet finish from last season.

The Columbia City volleyball team ended their season in the sectional final game against NorthWood Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Eagles made it to the sectional final game after taking out West Noble in three games (25-14, 25-21, 25-20) during the semifinal round.
The sectional final game was a much different story as NorthWood defeated the Lady Eagles in three games 25-6, 29-27, 25-18.
CC girls' cross-country at the Plex for sem-state meet starting at 1 pm.
CC volleyball vs. West Noble in semi-final round hosted at Tippy Valley starting at 12:30 pm. If CC would win, they will have a 3:30 championship game.
Whitko boys' cross-country at the Plex for semi-state meet starting at 1 pm.
Whitko 17, Bremen 20 (OT)
Heart breaker for the Wildcats! If there was going to be a close fought battle this week, the Wizard thought this would be the game and it didn't disappoint. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the season comes to an end, but with not a lot to be bummed about. Sole possession of the TRC was a huge step in the right direction for the Wildcats and I'm sure when Whitko fans wakeup in the morning, whispers of a successful season next year will fill the air.
Columbia City 41, DeKalb 21
Pretty much the game Columbia City fans thought they would see (minus about 7 points from the DeKalb score). The Eagle offense was too powerful for the Baron defense, putting up 498 total yards. Quarterback Logan Rehrer was 12 for 16, 217 yards, and 3 TDs, while running back Cody Wildman ran for 151 yards on 19 carries and 1 TD. The Eagles continue their run to play in November with a road game to Angola next Friday evening.
Churubusco 50, Adams Central 6
This game has a much larger margin of victory than what was advertised. However, the Eagles stunned the Flying Jets with their big-play defense and full throttle offense. 'Busco travels to Southwood next Friday evening after Southwood upset Southern Wells 21-14.
On Friday, football fans will see the first round of sectional games. All three teams enter into postseason play with a one-loss regular season and look for late runs into November. For a look at the sectional brackets click on the IHSAA link below.

The Columbia City girls' cross country team placed first at the Marion regional on Saturday night, giving them an automatic bid into the New Haven semi-state on Saturday.
Freshman Samantha Roush (18:33) led the way for the Eagles as she won the meet. Senior Renee Menzie (18:47) followed up with a second place finish, after winning the sectional meet on Tuesday night.
The Eagles had an eighth place finish in freshman Brooke Werstler (19:23). Columbia City topped out the top 20 places with Laken Lefever in 14th (19:32), Samantha Engle (19:33) in 15th, and Carlee Hearld (19:36) in 16th.
Columbia City 32, Norwell 10
It's been 20 years since Columbia City has celebrated a conference title, but tonight that drought is over as they brought back a piece of the NHC crown. Simply put, the Eagle offense was too much for the Knights. Columbia City out-rushed the Knights by 190 yards, threw for 122 yards, and piled up 373 yards of total offense. Congrats CC!
Whitko 21, Tippy Valley 14
Whitko guaranteed themselves sole possession of the TRC crown with the win tonight. On the road, they pounded the ball into the gut of Tippy Valley and secured the win. The Wildcats went undefeated in conference play. Congrats Whitko!
Churubusco 45, Lakeland 28
Lakeland tried to climb back into this game in the fourth quarter, but the Eagle offense was too strong and determined to let that happen. The Eagles claim the NECC for the second straight year, but share the spot with Angola. Congrats Churubusco!

Whitko at Tippy Valley @ 7 pm
Game of the week
Lakeland at Churubusco @ 7:30 pm
I am extending the time you have to send in your predictions for tonight's games. Send in your predictions by 6:45 and I will still accept them. Here's the rules:
1.) Visit the website every week to find out if that week is a prize-winning week. If it is, there will be an "upcoming games" article posted to the website, so you know what games to predict.
2.) You must get on the website, check the upcoming games, and email in your predictions of the winner for each game to the Talk of the Town Sports Editor at wcsportswriter@gmail.com.
3.) In the case of a tie, you must also send in a total tiebreaker score for the "Game of the Week" (the "Game of the Week" will be noted each week).
4.) If a winner can't be determined by the tiebreaker, a winner will be picked from random drawing.
5.) Predictions will be accepted all week until game day at 6:45 pm.
6.) Winners will be notified through email on how to receive their prize.
7.) All decisions are final.
8.) Must be 18 years old to play and coaches and players are not eligible.
Well, this is it for the Wizard and football season (he doesn't like to predict sectional games). Will Whitley County see three conference champions? Chances are good, but don't celebrate too early...
Lakeland at Churubusco @ 7:30 pm
After last week's meltdown, the Eagles need to win this one to ensure a piece of the NECC. 'Busco needs to win and find Angola on the losing end to be the sole NECC champions. I think they won't have any problems, this is a rebound game for the Eagles
Churubusco 30 Lakeland 17
Columbia City at Norwell @ 7 pm
This game is huge for the Eagles, even though the Knights are 2-6 overall. Historically, the Eagles don't have success at Norwell, losing every match up on the road since 1994. Since 1994, the Eagles post a 0-8 record at Norwell and only a 4-12 record overall. The Eagles need to come out with all cylinders running, if not, a conference title is out of reach. Despite history, the Wizard says the Eagles win, but by not as much as you think.
Eagles 28 Norwell 24
Whitko at Tippy Valley @ 7 pm
This is the year the Wildcats claim the TRC title, something they haven't done since 2002, when they shared it with Southwood. The difference this year is that Whitko will win the TRC title and not have to share any of it with another team. This game should be a thriller, though.
Whitko 17 Tippy Valley 14
Columbia City at Norwell @ 7 pm
Whitko at Tippy Valley @ 7 pm
Game of the week
Lakeland at Churubusco @ 7:30 pm
This week is the last week of your chance to win a $10 Subway gift card from the County Line Subway. If you have ever noticed, every Friday we post a Friday Football Forecast, where a fictional Wizard predicts each county schools' game. Now you will have the chance to do the same, but if you are the week's winner, you will receive a gift card of $10 value from County Line Subway.
Here's how to play:
5.) Predictions will be accepted all week until game day at 3 pm.
6.) Winners will be notified through email on how to receive their prize.
7.) All decisions are final.
8.) Must be 18 years old to play and coaches and players are not eligible.
Churubusco 38, Fairfield 52
Who predicted this outcome? Certainly not the Wizard and he bets not many of you. Not sure what happened, just know it looks like the Eagles need to shake this one off and come to play in their final home game this season against Lakeland. 'Busco suffers their first loss this season, but still has a very good chance at the NECC title.
Columbia City 31, Carroll 24
Columbia City showed why they are the class of the NHC when they went up 31-10 on the Chargers late in the fourth quarter. Carroll tried to play catch-up after CC put in their JV, but it wasn't enough for the Chargers as Columbia City won on senior night. The Eagles had 384 total yards of offense and have one more game left before an NHC champion(s) are crowned, CC is still in the hunt.
Whitko 27, Rochester 24 (OT)
Oops! The Wizard predicted this game to go the other way around. He promises to not underestimate the Wildcats anymore this season. The exciting win came on the heels of 204 rushing yards and 102 passing yards, on the road. With the win, the Wildcats stand alone at the top of the TRC with one more road game at Tippy Valley left.
With two weeks left, all three area schools are in position to at least own a piece of their respective conference titles. All three schools sit at the top of their conference. All three schools have no more than one loss seasons and we are deep into the season. Has this ever happened to Whitley County? What a display of pure guts and glory by Churubusco, Columbia City, and Whitko. Let's get right to it!
Churubusco at Fairfield @ 7:30 pm
Every year, this ends up being a possible deciding factor on who wins the NECC title. A 'Busco win and they ensure taking home a piece of the conference title. A Fairfield win and 'Busco has some work left to do in the final week. The Eagles were given a bit of a scare at Culver Academy last week, but then they showed why they are the class of Northern Indiana. 'Busco was contained through much of last week, so look for them to let loose against Fairfield to make up for lost time.
Churubusco 35 Fairfield 20
Carroll at Columbia City @ 7 pm
If not already, this game has rivalry written all over it. Since 1994, the series is tied 8-8 between the two schools. Columbia City is the class of the conference and Carroll is somewhere in the middle. On paper, this looks like an Eagle win, but stranger things have happened...just ask East Noble.
Columbia City 24 Carroll 17
Whitko at Rochester @ 7pm
Both teams are sitting with a 5-0 record in conference play and both teams are sitting at 6-1 season records. Think this game is big? You are right, the winner will stand alone at the top of the conference with one week left to play. Problem for Whitko is that they travel to Tippy Valley in the last week of the regular season. So a win this week and another big game in the final week. It seems that I have bet against Whitko plenty this season, but a game at Rochester doesn't help.
Whitko 17 Rochester 20
Columbia City 56, East Noble 55
The Wizard predicted a one point victory, but didn't predict such a high scoring game. This was more like the score of a high school JV basketball game. Nevertheless, Columbia City found a way to win and evened the race for a conference title. Huge, huge, huge victory for the Eagles, especially on the road. CC QB Logan Rehrer completed 29 of 50 passes for 458 yards, 4 TDs, and no INTs. The Eagles posted 673 total offensive yards while rushing for 215 of those yards.
Whitko 21, North Miami 13
A big interception, towards the end of the game, by junior Derek Snep gave Whitko the win. Whitko's running attack wore out the North Miami defense and until late in the fourth quarter, the game was knotted at 13. Whitko improves to 6-1 on the season (5-0 in TRC). The second huge, huge victory of the night.
