By the numbers...

By Andrew Ferrell

As head coach Chris Benedict and the Columbia City Eagles head into Semi-state play on Saturday, here are some facts to think about.

19: Number of years Benedict has been coaching (13 seasons at CC).

205: Wins Benedict has snatched while at CC (286 overall).

69: Percentage of games won by Benedict while with the Eagles.

26: Number of sectional titles won by Columbia City. (4 during current Benedict era).

6: Number of regional titles won by Columbia City (3 during current Benedict era).

1: Number of Semi-state titles won by Columbia City (2004).

1: Number of State final runner-up (2004).

If the game is on the line this Saturday, the numbers tell me to bet on Benedict and the Eagles.

All three area schools advance in sectionals

By Andrew Ferrell

Whitko 61, NorthWood 45

Before tonight, a Whitko-Columbia City rematch was not guaranteed, but Whitko took all doubts away with a 61-45 win over NorthWood in the first round of sectional play. Defense was key for the Wildcats as they forced 19 turnovers on NorthWood to solidify the victory. The Wildcats and Eagles, two well-known rivals, will square off on Friday night at 6pm in the semifinal round of the sectional as the Eagles received the first round bye. Both teams were 15-5 on the season and Columbia City won against the Wildcats in the season opener 59-58 on a last second shot. The sectional games are hosted by Wawasee.

Churubusco 59, Fremont 49

The Churubusco win over Fremont means they move to the semifinal round of the Garrett sectional and play the Railroaders at 6pm Friday. Churubusco owned a 13-6 season record and Garrett owned a 7-12 season record, with Garrett winning the game between the two schools earlier in the season 47-40.
