Ground game lifts Eagles into finals
« September 2011 | Main | November 2011 »
Semi final rounds
Churubusco 28, Madison-Grant 20
Solid ground game from senior Josh LeFever and the combo of Cory Miller and Jason Nicodemus. Strong defense front from the Eagles as they prepare for the challenge of FW Bishop Luers.
Whitko 14, Garrett 42
Garrett's running game and offense too much for the Wildcats. Whitko finishes the year 7-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference with many returning starters.
Columbia City 10, FW Dwenger 27
The Eagle defense showed a lot of heart and determination as they caused a handful of Dwenger turnovers and got after the quarterback all night. The Eagle offense simply couldn't find a rhythm. The Eagles got the game down to four points on two different occasions, but a few false start penalties, in scoring position, hurt the situation. The Eagles end the season with a solid 6-4 record and will return a lot of experience.
Churubusco 38, Woodlan 0
Needless to say, this more than likely was expected. Churubusco has a much tougher road ahead. The Eagles will host Madison-Grant next Friday in the semifinal round.
Whitko 18, FW Concordia 15
Whitko stormed back after being down 13-0 early to grab a big victory over a SAC school. Both sides of the ball stepped up big to help the Wildcats advance to the semifinal round and travel to Garrett.
Volleyball sectionals
2A-South Adams at Churubusco in the South Adams sectional
Churubusco fell to South Adams in the first round of sectionals on Oct. 20. The Eagles ended their season in a 5-match battle, falling 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 14-16.
3A-Eastbrook at Whitko in the Norwell sectional
Whitko completed their tournament season with a loss to Eastbrook in three matches. The Wildcats fell 8-25, 13-25, 16-25.
4A-FW North Side at Columbia City in the Carroll sectional
It took Columbia City 5 matches to dispose of North Side in the first round of sectionals and with the victory the Eagles will battle against NHC foe East Noble on Saturday for the right to play in the sectional final. The Eagles beat the Redskins, 29-27, 25-21, 15-25, 20-25, 17-15.
Football sectionals
The 39th Annual IHSAA football tournament begins Friday, Oct. 21.
2A-Churubusco (9-0) at Woodlan (1-8) @ 7:00 pm
The Eagles are coming off a huge win against NECC rival Lakeland for the conference championship and look to keep their momentum going.
3A-Whitko (5-4) at FW Concordia (1-8) @ 7:00 pm
Whitko throttled Tippy Valley to ensure they had to share a piece of the TRC title. Concordia plays in the SAC, which means it plays a much tougher schedule. Should be a decent game.
4A-FW Dwenger (5-4) at Columbia City (6-3) @ 7:00 pm
Columbia City looks to finally avoid the road block of losing to Dwenger in the sectional. Dwenger's record doesn't show their very strong regular season schedule. However, Columbia City playing in the NHC isn't a pushover.
Tennis state tournament
In the individual state tournament, Columbia City's Derek Hinen looked to add to the Eagle sectional crown by bringing home an individual Regional championship. Hinen posted a victory in the first round of the regional bracket beating South Bend Riley's Aaron Zaderej 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the championship match, Hinen fell to the undefeated Luke Sanderson from Kankakee Valley 6-0, 6-0.
Cross Country tournament
In regional play, the Columbia City Lady Eagles advanced into the semi-state round, finishing behind first place Huntington North and second place Homestead. Taking home the individual regional championship was City sophomore runner Samantha Roush at 18:11.78. Also, finishing in the top 10 for the Eagles was junior Carlee Hearld at 19:39.34 in sixth.
On the boys' side, both Columbia City and Whitko advance onto the semi-state round. Whitko placed second with 77 points, behind Homestead's 51 points. Columbia City just got in at the fifth place spot with 135 points. Columbia City's top runner was Brenden Zoltek in the seventh spot at 16:24.09 and Whitko followed behind with Dylan Cozad in the ninth spot at 16:35.28.
Finishing up the regular season...
Churubusco 17, Lakeland 10
Congrats to the Eagles as they win the NECC.
Columbia City 37, Norwell 7
Another big first half for the Eagles. Looking to carry over the momentum for sectionals.
Whitko 24, Tippy Valley 15
Whitko proves the Wizard wrong again. Good win for the Wildcats at they spoiled Valley's chances as sole TRC champs.
Last picks until next season because the Wizard doesn't like to pick the sectional games. Coming up to the last week of the regular season, and missing one week of predictions, the Wizard is 17-4. That being said, he feels pretty confident he'll be right on the money this week. If this was poker, he'd be "all in."
Norwell at Columbia City @ 7pm
Should be the easiest of all three games to predict. Norwell is at the bottom and Columbia City is somewhere at the top, not much more to say.
CC 38 Norwell 14
Tippy Valley at Whitko @ 7 pm
This game becomes a bit harder to predict because last year Whitko beat the Vikings on their turf. I'm guessing that Tippy Valley wants a pay back and they are the elite of the conference. As much as Whitko has turned around their season since the CC game and as much as I want to believe they can win, I'm not completely convinced, but it wouldn't take much to change my mind. Even with a loss, I think the Wildcats can be a sleeper in their sectional.
Tippy Valley 35 Whitko 24
Churubusco at Lakeland @ 7:30 pm
This is the game that becomes exponentially more challenging to predict. Both teams have rolled through their season with no complications; a perfect 8-0. Both want to win the conference title and their is no easier way, win and its yours. For a regular season game, this is huge. I've got no real reason to pick against the Eagles, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Lakers win the NECC.

Soccer sectionals
Girls
Columbia City lost in the first round to Homestead 3-0 on Oct. 6. Homestead ended up being the sectional champions.
Whitko moved soccer from a club to a sport this year and in their first year playing as a member of the IHSAA, the Wildcats won their sectional 2-1 in overtime against Blackford on Saturday. The Wildcats will take on FW Concordia, on the campus of FW Canterbury, October 15 at 1 pm. The winner of the match moves on to the semi-state rounds.
Boys
Columbia City made it to the sectional finals by beating Huntington North in the first round 2-1 in overtime. In the sectional final match, the Eagles fell to Homestead 10-0.
Whitko fell 9-0 in the first round of sectionals to FW Concordia. This year was the first year for Whitko in the IHSAA for soccer.
Cross Country State Tournament
All three schools send their boys and girls teams to sectionals tonight at Marion starting at 5 pm. Results to come later.
Volleyball sectionals
Columbia City opens 4A sectional tournament play on Oct. 18 and drew FW North Side in the first round. Sectional #5 is hosted by Carroll.
Churubusco opens the first round of 2A sectionals against South Adams on Oct. 18. Sectional #36 is hosted by South Adams.
Whitko picked up first round opponent Eastbrook in the 3A sectionals on Oct. 18. Sectional #23 is hosted by Norwell.
Football sectionals
Columbia City ends the regular season Friday against Norwell and will open up the first round of sectionals next week at home against FW Bishop Dwenger.
Churubusco finishes the season on the road against Lakeland, where the winner will have sole possession of the NECC title. The Eagles drew a game at Woodlan for their first round of sectional play.
Whitko completes their season with a home game against Tippy Valley. The Wildcats travel to FW Concordia for their first round sectional contest.

Rochester @ Whitko
This is a battle for second place, so far. If Whitko wins and Tippy Valley loses, next week's match is the showdown for a share of the TRC. If Whitko wins and Tippy Valley wins, then Whitko needs to win next week to grab a share of the TRC. If Whitko loses and TV loses, a share of the title is still possible. If Whitko loses and TV wins, 2nd place is the best chance for the Wildcats. Confusing? Yes. Why is the Wizard concerned about Tippy Valley? They are last opponent on the Whitko schedule and their outcome is half of the determining factor on whether or not the Wildcats have a chance to at least share a conference title. However, the Cats better just concentrate on winning this week because it will be no cake walk.
Whitko 22 Rochester 20
Columbia City @ Carroll
The Eagles seem like they haven't completely recovered from the Homestead game. A win over the second to last team, DeKalb followed by two losses at New Haven and home against East Noble. They need to start to prove themselves again with sectionals lurking around the corner. Carroll has been the NHC sleeper and will look to avenge their loss last weekend to Homestead. Another tough weekend for the Eagles.
CC 17 Carroll 24
Fairfield @ Churubusco
During the last five seasons, Fairfield has had 'Busco's number. Especially last year, when they sent Churubusco home with a 52-38 beating. 'Busco would love to change the course of what seems like fate and head into Lakeland with a chance to be the sole team at the top of the NECC. Gonna need to play with lots of heart tonight.
